a few days ago i installed the latest update "MS02-054: Unchecked Buffer in File Decompression Functions May Allow Attacker to Run Code)" i think it was from the automatic update, restarted and now when it starts up to the login process it gives me the BSOD and shuts it down. i cant get into safe mode or any other boot option except booting from the cd recovery console. anyone else getting this error? i feel hopeless since it sounds like i might need to format which i want to avoid at all costs since i have so much sensitive data on my hd..:(

This patch can be removed, according to http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/n-001.shtml

That's all can can say on that I'm afraid. Goodluck.

Aagh, from now on make a separate partition for that sensitive data.

Good luck with restoring your hd.

You probably thpought about this already but just in case . . . Even if that windows install is toast there is no need to loose all your data.

1. Boot from a CD, rename windows to something else. Now re-install to a new directory. or

2. Hook up this HD as a slave or secondary to another system, copy over your precious files and then reformat/reinstall.
