I have recently built a system for a neighbor and after troubleshooting it and finding out I got a bad stick of memory all has been well. Everything is new, P4 1.8 asus MB, 256 mb pc2100,ATI 8500le seagate 60gb,asus cdrw, asus cdrom, Windows XP pro, ect...
Upon first boot of system I installed all the mb drivers, agp driver, and the new catalyst drivers with control panel. He used the system for 2 weeks constantly playing max payne, rogue spear and work related programs(of course) and not a single glitch until yesterday when he went to load max payne and the system locked up bad, The screen went blue said something about a dump? Anyways it wasn't the looping error that sometimes happens with my GF 3 ti200 but I couldn't even boot in vga mode, the screen was all corrupt with scrambled colors. I tried to boot in safe mode and it wouldn't boot. I finally put my video card in it and it booted up but I didn't want to install drivers in fear of having too many drivers in the registry. I then removed all the ati references in the system including registry and put ati card back in and booted up and it worked so I installed catalyst drivers, control panel and all was well until next reboot it goes blank on boot right after the windows xp splash screen, try in vga and get weird colors try last known good settings in f8 options and still nothing. I am going out of my mind, I can't keep going over there to fix this thing, I feel as if i'm married to this computer and my wife is getting pissed off  . Any suggestions would be appreciated. I even went so far as to remove servce pack 1 that he installed even though he said he's played since installing sp1. I am really regreting building this for free with all the time I have invested in it. Thx for any help. I almost forgot, it doesn't seem to be heat related either, im running 35-38c with arctic silver and a P4 boxed sink\fan.

Make sure that the fan on the Radeon is actually spinning. They do fail.

Is the motherboard compatible with the card? I heard of a person who had a P4 mobo with an 8500. 8500's don't seem to like some p4 mobos for some reason, while geforces won't have any probs. Check the site - I know you think it's new but the mobo MAY need a BIOS flash...
