Ok, now that I know I can post to this forum now.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I need to connect an 80mm fan inside of a system. it had bare wires and on first thoughts, I set it up to work with a regualr 4 plug power connection that would nmormally be used to work with a hdd or cd-rom. Now I need that connection and I was wondering if there would be any problems with a hard wire directly to a fdd power connection. Can I cap the yellow and one of the blacks to the fdd power (coming straight from the PS) with electrical tape and then connect bare wires to the black and red (power) of the fdd connection? Is there any problem with splicing afan directly like this?
Thanks
Dave

There should be no trouble with this at all, assuming that you've picked the correct voltage "hot" wire (as opposed to ground) for the fan. Since the voltages are low--5 volts and 12 volts, you can even test them with a voltmeter by hand without fear of shock ( yea, right, thats easy for me to say!) lol

Are both of the blacks on a fdd conection grounds? I would assume I should use the red and one of the blacks (does not matter?)
Thanks
Dave
I believe both are ground (why?) easy way to check for sure is put a voltmeter across both blacks--should get zero reading. Also, as a double check, with the computer OFF, both ahuld give you near zero ohms to case ground or motherboard ground.

You'll want to use the yellow wire (12+) and the black wire next to it. That will give you a 12 volt power connection for the fan!

which black wire doesnt really matter if you open up your power supply all of the black wires get soldered into the same spot on the power supply curcuit board anyways

Use the yellow instead of the red? i used the red fromt he hdd/ cdrom connection and it worked fine. Are the colors different ont he fdd connection than the hdd/cdrom connections?
Thanks

The red wire is only 5 Volts!

Sorry if I am out of place here, but for some reason...I don't seem to follow along. If all you need, is to use the 4 pin socket, that normally would connect to a hdd or floppy, ect. You can get a splitter and have two ends from the one coming from the power supply. These splitters have an end that connects into the end with the red, yellow and two blacks from the psu. when you plug in the splitter (wrong term, but the best I can think of) you will then have two ends with the 4 pin sockets to do what ever you need...two hdds, two floppies...whatever, all from one power lead from the supply. Radio Shack has these, Walmart...several places carry these.

I agree Bovon. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I was trying to get this doen last night (trying to rush things a bit) and since it was for my own use, I was going to cut corners. I can go and get a splitter now since I ran out of time last night. Thanks for the help guys.
