Check this out, IBM's 6-story tall Linux advertisment. (http://www.adage.com/news_and_features/features/20010302/article3.html)

Recently IBM has poored hundreds of millions of dollars into Linux devolopement -Microsoft must really be feeling the pressure now.

Looks like IBM might still be sore about the "MS-DOS" betrayal.

MS-DOS? Doubt they care much about that. It's OS/2 vs. NT that IBM probably still has a bit of a grudge about.

Joel - jokingly referring to back when MS went ahead and released their own DOS when IBM thought they had proprietary use of the OS.

Yeah... but I would tend to think IBM is far more sore with how the whole OS/2 vs. NT thing turned out. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Roy,

You might not remember the days when IBM ruled the roost. Most of us would still be looking at a 'black box' and a black screen with a 'C' prompt if it was still left up to IBM. I remember when the only time you could get IBM support is when they smelled a dollar (such as sending out an $100/hr engineer to install a hard drive.
Bill Gates has some faults, but he unleashed the PC's to the public.

While I agree that IBM is no saviour from Microsoft world domination - that was then this is now - and IBM is pouring support into Linux. If you are not familliar with the GNU license and Linux you really should check it out.

The PC would have come to the masses regardless of Billy Gates and it would have come with many flavors of operating systems in a truly competitive atmosphere where only the best, most robust, and stable of platforms could survive. Lest we forget that IBM was behind Apple in releasing a PC to the public.

You know what I heard today in a meeting? IBM makes more money than Apple does on each I-mac sold. That's cause of the components in which the I-mac is composed of (hopefully not that ugly casing)... I found that tidbit hilarious.

Anyway, back to the point... I came aboard the company a year ago and you won't believe the push we have on Linux... my kid won't be using Windows in the future ! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Any way to make M$ look twice at Linux and shudder is great news to me.

Microsoft should wake up, and should realise that you cannot force garbage onto people, sooner or later these people will find (create) better alternatives.

Well IBM's efforts on linux wouldnt be savoured by the normal end user (notice the word server ) and if you dont know squat about comps then MS os's are still the easiest place to start . ( I hate MS too by the way - just pointing out a fact ) .
