What is a fatal exception 0D @ 0117:00001A2A?
I get a bunch of other error boxes before this. I have no mouse. i get a Driver Memory Error, A nscheck performed an illegal operation The task bar has dashes across the top of it. DSS agent has performed an illegal operation.
I can get to safe mode I'm using win95.
Can anyone try to get me started on fixing this?

Here are a few questions that, if answered, might make the specifics of the problem more apparent.

Did you just build this computer?
Has it been sitting without care for a long time?
How long has this problem been going on?
What have you done already to resolve the issue?

OK, with any problem, you have to first answer: When did this start happening? Was anything installed or removed before this happen? When does this event occur: startup, in a particular app, etc.? Once you answer those for yourself, do this:

1. Boot into Safe Mode

2. Right-click START > Open > double-click Programs > Starup

3. move ALL of the icons in the Startup folder to the desktop

4. click START > Run > Regedit (don't worry, what you are about to do is completely safe)

5. expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key

6. expand SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, then Windows, then CurrentVersion, then click ONCE on the folder called "RUN"

7. in the column on the right, delete all of the items listed there. The worst this can do is prevent those programs from starting up with the computer, this will not prevent their manually execution. If you REALLY are worried, just post the items and I'll tell you what they are and why you don't need them.

8. Then close the Registry Editor.

9. Click Start > FIND > FILES and FOLDERS

10. type the following in the "Named:" field

*.tmp;*.chk

select C: in the "Look in:" field. Search.

11. Delete ALL of the files it finds (they are absolutely not needed. If a few of them can't be deleted, don't worry, just leave them. Empty your Recycle Bin also.

12. Restart the computer in normal mode

Post back if you need more help. There's still a lot more we can suggest.

This started ,I think, after a cd was tried and didn't work. Supposedly not installed. This happens at bootup.Have to use the keyboard because the mouse does not work.
I think the nscheck was part of netsetter. because I managed to get on line and delete netsetter through their web site and that error box does not come up

TJ- It was not just built, has not sat neglected, the problem is recent , and I am doing what is stated here to resolve the problem.

Check this out www.windowstrouble.com (http://www.windowstrouble.com) It's a good site for tracking down Windows errors. Good luck! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Also, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > look in "RunOnce," "RunServices," and "RunServicesOnce" and make certain there is NOTHING in the columns on the right(except the "Value Not Set" of course)

More:
1. boot into Safe Mode

2. check Add/Remove programs and remove any programs you don't want or need anymore, then restart in Safe Mode again

3. open Device Manager and remove the Display Adapter, the Monitor, the modem, the mouse, and any COM ports

2. restart in normal mode

If none of this helps, you might want to try reinstalling Windows on top of itself before considering more drastic actions. Let us know what happens.

I did the above. The error messages don't come up but there is still no mouse. I tried to install the mouse with the add/remove hardware. It went through the motions but did not work.
I also notice that I have a aol instant messenger icon in the task bar and one for real player. I do ctrl alt del to get get rid of it, it goes through the motions but the icons stay in the task bar.
One more Ques. When the window comes up from ctrl alt del is there supposed to be a line that says sys tray? If it is it is not there.

Hello JDBIC,
Sounds like you're not having much fun.
If you don't want those programs to load when you start up, go to 'start', 'run' and type in "msconfig" in the 'open' window. hit 'ok' and choose the 'startup'tab. You will see a list of programs and can uncheck any that you don't want to have loaded when your computer starts. (it just occured to me that this may only work in Win98??)
Also, could you try hooking your mouse to a serial port? Mine came with an adapter for that.

I think the driver memory error thing is caused by the KakWorm virus, I had the same thing awhile back. Does anyone know where the thread is that has the link to find out how to delete this virus, as I don't remember where it is. Maybe try to search the sysopt threads. Hope this helps

Mlope -- MSConfig is not available in Windows 95.

jdbic -- Realplayer and AIM are listed in the "RUN" folder in the Registry. You should remove them from there with the instructions from my first post. OR, you can also do this:

FOR REALPLAYER:

1. Right-click on the RealPlayer tray icon, select PREFERENCES

2. When RealPlayer opens, get to the VIEW menu > PREFERENCES > then click on the SETTINGS button near the bottom > UNcheck "Enable Start Center"

3. close realplayer

FOR AIM:

1. right-click on the tray icon for AIM, select Preferences

2. click on the GENERAL tab and UNcheck "Start AIM when Windows start"

3. close AIM preferences

4. Restart the computer

You should also look into the Kak virus info that fangoria suggested. Just do a search for "driver memory" and "driver memory error" here on sysopt or at www.mcafee.com (http://www.mcafee.com) or www.norton.com (http://www.norton.com)

You might just want to reinstall Windows on top of itself also. You won't lose anything that way.

I can't do any right click because I don't get the mouse. In safe mode, I go through the actions, but nothing stays, and AIM and Realpaly don't come up at all. Anything that does seem to work in safe, does not seem to 'save' into the next boot.
Now, a question...When the window comes up from ctrl alt del is there supposed to be a line that says sys tray? If it is it is not there.
What is systray? Where can I get it?
You also said I could just reinstall win95 and not lose anything..do you mean put the disk in and click install? And what wont get lost? My favorites? Document files? Other things I've saved in various programs? What about programs installed that are not from 95?

I have reinstalled Windows several times over its self without any problems, this is not to say that it can't happen tho. When installing Windows back over its self, it will stop when it comes to dll files that are a later version that comes with Win in the original install. It will tell you that the file is older, and do you want to keep your newer file...say yes.

On the systray deal...I can't remember about win95, but win98 does have systray running and I believe win95 did as well...I can't imagine what or where it got off to on yours. It should be in startup...see if it is, and if there is a check there for it to load at startup

This started ,I think, after a cd was tried and didn't work

What cd? I once tried to install a fancy mouse program and eventually had to nuke the whole thing and start over. If you can get cd support from your startup disk then you can try to reinstall w95. I wonder if sfc works in W95, i have no idea.....to do that you need to go to start/run/and type in sfc, but you need to have cd support once again.
Dark Mallard gets kudos for his time spent here btw

jdbic -- My last suggestion regarding AIM and RealPlayer was just one way it could removed if you had mouse control in Normal Mode. In Safe Mode: just open AIM and Realplayer manually from their program group and edit the preferences per my instructions.

REINSTALLING WIN95: Yes, you can reinstall Windows by booting from a CD-ROM boot diskette and running SETUP.EXE from the Windows 95 CD. You will not lose any programs. It just copies over itself. Some minor preferences (background color, font size, etc.) will be returned to their default setting. Also, I usually recommend that you answer "NO" when it asks if you want to keep the newer system file (don't worry, these aren't files that YOU created, just Windows system files). This ensures that a "known good" (albeit slightly older) copy of the file is reinstalled.

SYSTRAY: It was listed in the "Run" folder in the Registry. You can manually add it back (in Win98 this is far easier to do than Win95):

1. Boot into Safe Mode. Click START > RUN > REGEDIT

2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENTVERSION > then click once on the "RUN" folder

3. In the column on the right side, right-click in a blank area and select NEW > STRING VALUE

4. name it "SystemTray" (without quotes)

5. double-click on the SystemTray string you just created

6. In the "Value Data:" field type the following exactly:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTRAY.EXE

7. Click OK, Close the Registry Editor and restart

The System Tray will return. If you had Windows 98, there would only be two steps

Hi. I tried everything suggested. I even reinstalled win95. The reinstal had to be done in regular mode because there is no cd driver in safe mode. It went through all the motions..lights blinked, questions popped up (I chose no to all the replacement questions), the Win Wallpaper appeared, there was music, and it rebooted...back to how it was before, no mouse, etc. The only thing diff. this time is that systray is back in the control alt delete window, but otherwise, it's all the same. This is really irritating, and I really apreciate everyone's advice - any more?

Are you running with the bare minimum connected to the computer, e.g. mouse, keyboard, monitor, and power only? Have you tried unplugging and reseating all of the cables (while powered off, of course)? If you haven't already, try that now.

Next suggestion:

If you do NOT want to format the hard drive, but don't mind reinstalling some programs, try this:

PARALLEL INSTALLATION OF WINDOWS 95:

1. Reinstall Windows, HOWEVER when it asks for the directory name, call it C:\WINDOWS2 instead of C:\WINDOWS.

This will create a whole new, seperate installation of Windows 95 (parallel to the original).

2. complete the installation.

This is a good way to find out if Windows was causing the problem or not. It's also very useful when backup is impossible and a good copy of Windows needs to be installed without formatting.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Nothing will be deleted by this, but your previous version of Windows will be disabled. You will have access to all of the files on your computer, but most programs will not function in this copy of Windows until they are reinstalled.

3. If that fixes the mouse problem, then just reinstall (you shouldn't need to uninstall anything) the programs that don't work in the new copy.

4. Then, move any data that you might have kept in the old C:\WINDOWS folder like stuff from your old Windows desktop (C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP).

5. After you have moved anything important from the old copy of Windows, just delete the C:\WINDOWS folder and you are good to go.

Let us know what happens.

If your error messages have stopped etc. and you simply don't have mouse, well could it be your mouse is FUBAR ???

Well darkmallard...I'm back in. The parallel install did the trick, but it had to be done from DOS because, like I said before, it just went through the motions otherwise. I am sloly going about reinstalling things I need, and have come to learn my hard drive had a whole lot of nonessential stuff on it! Thanks to you and to everyone else for your patience and great advice! You're all pros.
