I need help. My computer wont boot up. It when booting up, I get a message that says several files have been corrupted thats necessary for booting up.

I'm running Win95 and I only get to the screen wehre it attemps to run under safe mode (#3) only to default with a black screen with several notices of corrupted start up files and finally the c:> symbol

I'm not able to type anything on this line that the system will recognize or able to select the step by step to get in.

HOW do I reconfigure my hard drive? How do i reformat it and reload win95? I have NO clue so please be very elementary with me

The best way is to reformat c: drive and reinstall Win95, but you will lose all your files unless they are backed up on tape or disks. The next best is reinstall Win95 over the existing Win95. This should correct the messed up files and your existing hardware and files will remain in the new setup. Windows will run a little bit slower and might still have some problems.

There will be some that will say that reloading your OS over the top of your old OS is a bad idea, but it works, do you have a anti virus program? if not I suggest you get one as it sounds like you have a virus. If you cannot get it going with a reinstall post back and there is plenty of help here to get you up and running. Here is a link to a FREE anti virus program

It does sound like you may have been infected with a virus - or - your HD just plain crashed.

Boot to a floppy and see if you at least see the C: drive.
