Had 2k for 6 months oir more now

I've had to re-install / repair a few times...

latest is that kernel32.dll got 'taken out' by an error in VShield... a problem with the program WebScanX.exe meant MSInstaller went to repair VShield...

I didn't know what was happening... it just reported an error, error log generation, then came up with a 'program setup' message, so I cancelled it...!!! (good move.. ha ha..!)

Next I know is, I can't log onto 2k... get blue screen each time which flashes up an error message so fast you can't read it so I have to repair it... but I know enough now (I don't think...! ha ha) to want to avoid having to do a whole EDR... cos I hate reinstalling SP2 and IE6 and everythinbg else I'd have to do

So I watch that message over and over again, catching bits of it (must be written somewhere, but can I access it without 2k...?)
Eventually suss it says WINNT/System32/Kernel32.dll is knacked, replace it

I boot from CD, use console, check kernel32.dll and find it's 0(nought)kb, check another PC system, find it's 715kb, copy that to floppy, and from floppy to system32 (and dllcache so I've a backup next time)... and it works... I log on, WebScanX generates errors and MSInstaller starts but this time I let it do what it's doing and it fixes the VShield installation - which is actually pretty impressive (well it is to me...!)

But why do I have to keep fixing the OS - I thought it was stable.. and self-repairing (oh yeh, and it does teleporting too... I wish..?!)

Ok, win 95 crashed all over the place, 98SE occasionally, but this is ridiculous... one time before it was ntldr corrupted - surely the essential OS files aren't supposed to be this vulnerable (are they..?) so why is this happening...?
Is there a way of preventing this...? :(

Uninstall "webscanX"...
Update your Windows Installer Package to a newer version..

D'you think WebScanX has been responsible for all the OS system corruption?

Why is the OS so vulnerable to complete boot failure in this way?

Note that by what you say, it overwrites the kernel with nothing...
That isn't normal, and no OS is made of iron...

I've been running Win2k in my office for over a year now. I haven't had any major flare ups. It all depends on what programs you load. Win2k is way better in a corporate environment than Win98. Way less problems than before. If you throw enough stones at it, you can make any OS crash.

btw, I use norton corporate edition. It is da bomb for enterprise distribution and management. :)

IE6 installed? Maybe this is related.

Why do I Receive a WebScanX Error Whenever I Restart My Computer?
or
Can I use Internet Explorer 6 with VirusScan 5?

Affected Product: VirusScan
Affected Version: 5.10-5.21
Affected Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional ONLY
Resolved in Version: 6.0

Customers using Windows 2000 and then versions mentioned above are advised not to upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0 because of an incompatibility with the Download Scan/Internet Filter which results in a WebscanX error at startup. This ONLY occurs with VirusScan 5 and is NOT and issue with version 6 and higher.

If you are experiencing this issue, you can disable Download Scan/Internet Filter as a workaround and set system scan to scan all files or downgrade to Internet Explorer 5.x.This issue only occurs with people running Windows 2000 professional, VirusScan 5.10 – 5.21, and Internet Explorer 6.0. This is NOT an issue in VirusScan 6.

These 2 would have saved me loads of time and hassle... :(

Recovery Console can be installed as a Boot option which only Administrator can access
Start-->Run, Type: X (CD-Rom Drive letter):\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Installs recovery console on boot drive (C:\)

System Failure
Options can be changed. Particularly, you can prevent Win 2k automatically rebooting when system fails. Which gives time to read the failure notification, so you can suss out what's happened...!
Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->Advanced-->STartup and Recovery-->System Failure
Uncheck Automatically Reboot

Glad I know now :t
