I have made a firm decision to say NO to rebates influencing my purchasing decisions.
Rebates have been ruined by Co.s that drag their feet in getting Rebates issued or not issuing them at all!
I am not "fronting" money to Companies any longer!! As a consumer, i will speak loudest with my purchasing dollar!! I hope some sales/marketing people read this!!!
between Value America charging for products SEVERAL months before they ship and Rebates due to me ...i am starting to feel a little umm e-screwed ! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
OK i step down off of the soapbox now.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Read Sundays article (just scroll down the page) at extreme hardware (http://www.extremehw.com). It is about ways people get screwed on rebates.

I bought a new hp printer a year ago with a $50 rebate. After 12 wks. I get a letter saying that I had left out the "verification of purchase" sticker. I sent them every number/sticker/receipt I could find and got another letter 3wks later saying that the sticker they needed was on the BOTTOM of the printer itself! 3 more weeks later low and behold- a check for 50 bucks. I guess they were impressed with my persistance or just tired of hearing from me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm not a big lover of computer stores, however, up until now I have received all my rebates for items purchased at Comp USA..Just arrive, my rebate for 64Mb RAM $69.95-$30.00
from PNY. Got Creative WebCam rebate OK. Waiting on Blackout Buster and various small
rebates. Only been ripped off once on a scanner from DIGITAL RESEARCH TECNOLOGIES, and am about to send them another email letting them know how I feel. All in all it's just a risk you take, but I don't mind ruining a store manager's day if there is a
matter of principle involved. By that time the money becomes secondary and I will be heard. Like I've said ,I've only lost $30.00
so I don't consider that too bad in the long run.

the pickel

Just got finished sending that eamil... We'll see what happens.. $30.00 is $30.00

My experience with Compusa is similar to pickel. I've done maybe 25 such rebates and have received every one of them. Most have been timely and a few I needed to follow up on. Worse of the the bunch was a book w/$15 back from prentice hall. That was a challenge that took two followups and @ 15 weeks.

I finaly gave up on a rebate from digital research, after 7 months of email excuses from them, am waiting on several for stuff in my new build. we will see. actually even with out the rebates I built it at a good price, don't mean I don't want the rebates.

Rebates are kinda shady mainly because companies count on 75% or more of consumers not even bothering with trying to get the rebate, or forgetting or losing their receipt.

But if you know what you're getting into and are willing to raise a little hell if necessary, rebates can be a good deal. My previous video card (Diamond Stealth II) I got from BUYCOMP.com for $34 (including shipping) with a $30 rebate (with I received in about 8 weeks). Not bad.

I am saying no to rebates too. I have bought 2 products so far because of the rebates and have been screwed on both of them. The first was a scanner from Digital Research, the last was memory from PNY. It promised a rebate if you bought it from CompUSA but none have come.

Digital Research said they never received it and since I sent the original UPC I an SoL! So far PNY has ignored both of my rebate inquiries. Why even put that on their web page if they are just gonna ignore you?

Why don't they just cut the price instead of promising a rebate?

Why? Because mail-in rebates count as part of their quarterly reports as "income earned", while instant rebates don't count.
