This is exactly why I don't like 98 for purposes other than fun, like sound editing and games. I hadn't booted into 98 for a couple of weeks because I had been running 2000. The other day I reboot so i can make some changes to msdos.sys to make windows boot faster, and also to mix some music.

What comes up is the stupid windows protection error. I go into safe mode and run defrag, scandisk, system file checker and dr. watson, and everything comes up ok. I do a step by step boot with the bootlog activated and notice after I load the last VXD that there is a pause and then i get the windows protection error again. I boot into 2000 and read the bootlog.txt from 98 and see zero errors. I was too ticked off to go through anything more at the time, so I took a break from it all. Just today I decide to go through the step by step boot again and load all the VXD's except for the last one, which is for wavesynth, and windows loads fine. I reboot and it loads fine in normal mode. WTF????

Doesn't this sound just like a shower problem. There might be no logical reason for win to do that =) Just be happy it works again.

Same thing happens to me each time i go from win 2000 to win98. If i restart from win 2000 then choose win98 i get a windows protection error. If i reset using the button on the machine i get the same error on rebooting into win98. I have to power off the machine and then reboot from cold into win98. It will say it didn't finish loading properly but it i just say to boot normally it will be happy and i'll get to win 98 and all will be as it should be. It's been doing it for ages and i haven't got round to fixing it yet. I think it has something to do with my graphics card drivers but i can't remember what gave me that thought.
Still, if you find a solution i'd like to know.

Guess it's possible when you're doing a warm boot that it's holding on to some of the drivers in memory and they're conflicting?

Well, it wouldn't exactly matter because I have 2K running on an NTFS partition. So 98 can't even access those files. And it didn't matter cold or warm boot. Like I said it's fixed now, but it's just mind-boggling as to why it happened. And what just makes it even more strange is that I really didn't make any changes to fix it.
