I have been reloading a Gateway P4 class computer that developed a bad hard drive. (Gateway replaced it but that is another story). Anyway all is well except it keeps trying to find drivers for the "PCI Ethernet Controller". At first I thought this was caused by the NIC card so I removed it. It still looks for the drivers mentioned. I'm baffled. Any advice???

Does the ON BOARD NIC rings any Bell to you? :p :t

I thought exactly the same thing. I looked before and there is not one there. I will look again but unless I am blind, there is not one. The NIC came pre-installed from Gateway and even the paperwork shows the correct one. It does not show the second one.:( :(

Well if Everytime you Reboot and it the Windows Plug and Play detects a NIC in there

there must be a nic in that BOX somewhere  :x

go to www.gw2k.com and put in your serial number for tech support. you should be able to download your nic driver from there. If it's there, you might as well install the drivers.

I am inspecting the computer as I post. There is a video card, a sound card, a NIC card (this one does install) and a modem. If I take out the NIC card, the PCI Ethernet Controller still tries to load.

This should have been done already. The drive came from Gateway with the OS (WME) preloaded. Would prefer not to start from scratch again unless absolutely necessary. Not out of the question, however.

Did you try booting to safe mode and checking the device manager? maybe there is something weird in there.

did you try clearing the cmos?

do you have a usb cable modem?

is it possible that the chipset supports an onboard NIC, and Windows is detecting something in the chipset that reports a NIC without having the physical onboard connection?

There is a Cable modem that has not been attached but the software loaded. I'm not sure how to properly clear the CMOS. Just reset to defaults??
