anyone know where I can get a Quantum Fireball harddisk install utility. I cant find anything about harddisks at Quantum's web site. I am trying to reformat a HD that had win2k on it.

You don't need a hard disk utility unless you want to do a LOW LEVEL

if you just want to RE-PARTITION use FDISK

heck even Win2k Bootable CD will do it for you during the Install :t

go to the maxtor site - AllGamer's right if you're just reformatting, but you can get the quantum HDD utilities, etc. - the maxtor site has 'em (probably maxblast or powermax)

I would say, download the utility. even if your not wanting to do a low level format.
I have a Maxtor 20 Gig HHD, I downloaded the utility for that drive and I can part/format the disk in seconds.
Instead of waiting for windows to do it for me(takes ages)
Plus I read on the Maxtor website sometime ago(Don't have link)
That if you use the utility you IMPROVE the transfer etc of the disk.
Can't confirm if I have noticed. But I use it for formatting etc.
(NOT LOW LEVEL) I have never low level formatted.

:p :t :p

you're right - the maxtor format takes no time at all - I just have had problems sometimes when swapping a drive formatted by the utility out into other machines - never figured out why )-|

Partition Magic also formats the whole thing in seconds for a 160 gig drive :t

I bought a maxtor a staples. Imagine my suprise when i found a quantum inside. It also had a paper with it that said maxtors diagnostics etc. wouldn't work with the quantum. I felt short changed.

The drive i bought yesturday was Western digital. But it only has a one year warranty. :(

Quantum is Owned by Maxtor Literally, so
Maxtor = Quantum
Quantum = Maxtor

ok quantum may be a good drive but maxtor doesn't support it as well as they do their own. ie no diagnostic software, info is hard to find on their site. Bah humbug. It said maxtor on the box. If they are so proud of their stinkin quantum why didn't they tell me what was in the box?

I will have to say I'm satisfied with the quantums operation. I just didnt like their marketing practices. I hope i'm wrong about the diagnostics support. I have not needed any yet but I'm sure thats what the paper in the box said. The fancy partition, format utility worked fine but it relies on fdisk & format on your startup disk so if you know dos it's just window dressing.

you can still find Quantum diagnostic software on their website, yes is hard to find, but it's there :p

the reason why they advertize it as Maxtor instead of Quantum, cuz is they want the name of Quantum to die

that's why ;)

Ok big business marches on but if you buy a box that says maxtor isn't it against the law to put something else inside. I feel like my hd is a stepchild.(no offense to anyone)
