JUst working on PC and it reset / restarted of its' own accord - possible causes? (HDD? Mobo? Memory?)

Any likely effects on OS (Win2k) and other software? (eg file corruption)?

That can happen through loads of things. It could have crashed due to a software hang or something. If the cooling on your case isn't up to scratch perhaps the CPU overheated.

Or as QVark said, if your PSU isn't powerful enough, it could have allowed a drop in Voltage.
