After re-installing W2K & applying SP2 & upgrading WMP to version 7.1 thru Windoes Update I'm getting the aforementioned error message "Access Denied" when I attempt to play avi's or mpegs. the details of the error message are:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You do not have permission to play this file
Error ID = 0x80070005, Remedy ID = 0x00000000
This file contains protected multimedia content. You need to have permission to play this file. Please consult the system administrator or multimedia content provider to get permission to play this file and enter your password correctly when prompted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I can tell I've set all the proper security permissions, but I keep getting denied access. Any thoughts on how to get WMP to play these video files?

Ran your error, Error ID 0x80070005 Remedy ID 0x00000000, through newsgroups. It kept coming up with the following fix
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#adminprivs What privileges/permissions do I need to assign regular (non-admin) users in Win2K for them to be able to use WMP fully?
A: They need read/write access to the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Index", and the file "wmplibrary_v_0_12.db" that is in that folder. Note that these privileges should be automatically set correctly in Windows XP.
In some cases (streaming media, radio), the user will also need Full Control on: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{203b1ee d-db9f-40fb-87bd-1990982017d2}\Plugins .
There's quite a bit more info at the site, but this was the specific quote referenced. Was sometimes done to get by a quirk to allow the administrator to access. Mean anything?

Another common reference was to media being in a shared folder on a network and/or morpheus. Either one of those ring a bell?

I tried this fix to no avail. I also uninstalled version 7.1, but still no access. I've again review all the security options that I can think of, but I'm still denied access. I'm stumped on this one!:( :( :( :( :( :(

Last thing I can think of, from the same site that had the other "fix": enable sharing in the appropriate folder; Wherever you have your video files.

Are they on the same hard drive? Just noticed all your different drives. Wonder if you need to enable network sharing if the files are on a different drive?.

(Yea, sounds stupid I know. But with my XP_Home I've got a Firewire External HD that XP just insists is a high speed network connection. :( Never has worked like it should..try and get to a file and IE Download wizard may pop up. Not your situation, just mentioning it because sometimes wacky things happen that you might not suspect.)

I do have the video files on the firewire external drive. W2K sees it as just another logical drive. I don't see any indication that it is being seen as a high speed network connection. I'll do some more work with sharing to see if that helps. Thanks.:(

Everything else is exactly the same?

You reinstalled W2K and applied SP2 and upgraded WMP. Did you have SP2 before?

Have you tried a different media player?

Everything else is pretty much the same & WMP worked before I applied SP2. Plus it worked before I reinstalled W2K. Any suggestions for another video player? Thanks a lot.

Not much detail on some of these. But if works on w2k would at least see if it's w2k or wmp. Do you have _any_ avi mpeg that will play to test on? (Or is it just the old ones saved to disk that won't play?)

I've downloaded these, but haven't had time to test yet.
