i'm running win2kpro with a plextor 8/4/32 and 64MB of simm ram.. 2 out of every 3 discs that I try to burn using easy CD creator 4 deluxe.. freezes and I have to reboot... I'm sort of stumped (unless it's the small amount of ram) on why this is. It happens even if I burn it at slower speeds...
can anyone give me suggestions as to why this would be??
thanks

Might be too easy of a question, but are you copying on the fly? when was your last defrag? What is running in your system tray?
Just a few thoughts...

well, the sys is pretty bare bone.. not much running, but I haven't defragged in forever now that I think about it...
this is the first IDE burner that plextor put out, so I wouldn't be surprised if a firmware fix is in order as well. I'll look into those things...
as far as the adaptec is concerned.. it's simple and clean, and is sufficient for the stuff that I do... and I'd have to actually purchase other software to use, so that's prety much out of the question....
in the meantime, please keep the answers.. comin'
thanks

Loose adaptec coaster creator! Check out this site for "trial software" lol. http://www.cdrsoft.net
64Meg of RAM is more than enough.
A few of basic tips re burning
1 Always burn to image first unless using scsi system
2 Go to your cd properties in "Device Manager" and deselect Auto Insert
3 Defrag regularly (not so important if you burn to image first)
4 You can also disable dma, as the cd ROM sometimes writes over info that has not been burned yet causing a crash
The best thing you could do is delete adaptec software from your system and install Nero, CDClone or CDRWIN.

are you burning from a cd?? i have no problems with adaptec. im using win2k with 192 mb of ram. best way to burn is to make and image of the files you want to copy thru adaptec and you should have no problems

I'm actually burning audio cds..
should I make an image of those too??
i wouldn't think that should have to... they're on the same computer as the burner...

i went to the properties in device manager, and i couldn't even find an option for disabling auto insert or the dma... I'm sure that it's there, but everything is sort of screwy in win2k... can u tell me where to find these options in win2k?
thanks

Ez CD Creator 4.03a thru 4.03e worked perfectly under all 3 of my Win2K systems. 1 Scsi and 2 IDE setups.
To have Ez CD work correctly under Win2k you need to be running Version 4.02 or Higher.

I have good luck with Adaptec and the Plextor software under Win2k. Funny thing is I use the Adaptec software that came with the drive, EZcreator 3.5 and DirectCD 2.5....which arent supposed to work with Win2k.....but they do.
With Plextor, the DMA must be enabled for it to work proper. For copying any complete cd's I always burn from an image using the Plextor DiscDupe program.

Can't help you with that, but I doubled my ram and cut my coaster manufacturing in half. But still did too much coaster work. I went to Nero and I am really happy with it, heck I'm going to buy it! You're not getting ANY errors during the burn? Have you saved and checked the log? IMHO you will get better results if you don't use the copy on the fly either, like hey! what's the rush? I don't know why, but Nero works better for me with my AMD 750 Duron and 256k of ram.
