get a router with a built in switch. Linksys makes some good ones.
you would use CAT5 patch cables, not coax.
windows has built in networking. you need to set your systems to the same workgroup. make sure to add the same username and password to each system.
for more networking info, i suggest you check out

Does the laptop have a LAN card or build in LAN?
if yes
then sure a Crossover CAT-5 will be able to hook up both of this PCs without sharing the internet
:t
but if you want to share files along with internet
you'll need a router

#1 - since your in the UK and you say you already have ADSL i'm going to *** U ME that it's is connected using USB
then you COULD use just the "crossover" ethernet cable to connect the two computers with the ethernet ports
i've just realized you can maybe use USB in windows XP to do the INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING
but it would probably overtax it
look in the help files for ICS or sharing like i wrote above and it will describe what you can use
you'll need to go into the network control panel and enable file and?printer? sharing on both computers and on the last page there "identification" it would be alot easier if the workgroup was the same.
reboot
then select the hard drive properties on both comps and goto sharing. the most complete is full sharing with a PASSWORD - unless you love being hacked
in the help files there might be a link to the ICS wizard or in the internet options connections page - use it to make a floppy to run in the laptop and it will set it's connection up
there's more details but i've got to go

one thing - if you want to add another computer to this setup anytime
then use 2 ethernet cables and a "hub" instead of the "crossover" cable - it'll give you the chance to add say another couple computers
if you change the computers "name" in the network ID page to something easy - it'll make navigating to the hard drives a lot easier
the practically networked ICS page for winxp seems to be quite good
you can do the name stuff right now and put in the ethernet card asap then do the sharing setup before you even get the laptop
the printer stuff i'll have to doublecheck
