Hello everyone,
I have encountered a new error in setting up NT Server 4.0.

The background on why I am setting up some NT Server machines is explained at..

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118388&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

This is part of preparation for moving to Win2000 Server.

Anyway, I now am past the problems of getting the drivers in, and the HD recognition errors.

When I get NT 4 Server loaded, and load NT server service packs 3 and 4, then I can load the 3com drivers, since they need to have at least SPak 4. Then I load NT server service packs 5 and 6, and ie 5.5 and 6.0. I use Partition Magic to increase the partition size to 7.9 GB, as mentioned in other threads on this effort.

I have set this up as a standalone server first, and later I will set it up on the domain, and promote to BDC using Upromote.

My problem with the two setups I am now doing, is that I keep getting an error at login, saying that, one or more drivers or services failed, see Event Viewer. Event Viewer says

"Error 7023, Server service terminated. Not enough server storage is availiable. to process this command. "

My partiton is 3.9 GB. I have 512 MB of DDR RAM. I set the paging file to 550 - to 800 size range. Still get the error. I have no other processes running so I do not understand why it says there is not enough memory. I have an AMD Athlon XP on an MSI KT3 board.

I saw a thread on Sysopt located here........

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66597&highlight=error+7023

which says

>>>>>
Error 7023--
Straight from Technet, hope this helps.

CAUSE
=====

These error messages can occur if the Server and Computer Browser services have
been set to Automatic Startup on a stand-alone computer that is not connected to
a network or does not have a network adapter installed.

RESOLUTION
==========

The prevent these errors message, change the Server and Computer Browser
services to Manual Startup:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Services icon.

3. In the list of installed services, click Computer Browser.

4. Click Startup.

5. Change the Startup Type to Manual, and then click OK.

6. In the list of installed services, click Server, and then click Startup.

7. Change the Startup Type to Manual, and then click OK.

8. Click Close.

9. Restart your computer.

>>>>>

I tried shutting these two items off, putting them on Manual, as suggested above, and the Error msg at logon goes away. BUT this is not the solution I want. Since I will be using this as a server once I join the Domain, I will need to have the Server Service running, as far as I know.

So what do I need to do to clear this up in a clean fashion, with still letting the Server Service startup automatically at startup.???????????

If I disable the Server Service, then will I have to reload it from the NT CD, and will this help??? And will I have to go thru the entire setup again???? and reload all the service packs. ?? or is there a way to reload or restart the Server Service without reloading everything again?????

I will really appreciate some good comments. If I can get past this, I should be in good shape on this....

Thanks to everyone...--Ron

try these instructions here

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q231604&

and here's the explanation why it happends

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q151427

which does match what i said earlier

some how the NIC drivers are not installed properly

Hi Allgamer...thanks for the posts. The error message I get is the first message cited on the link

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q151427

In the error message for 7023, this is referenced
" Not enough server storage is available to process this command."
which is bogus because I have lots of memory and the paging file is the right size.

Reading the Cause section on this link above, gave me the idea that the most likely reason for my error msg was that I may not have reloaded the last NT Service Pack after loading the 3com drivers.

The Microsoft link above contains....

"Cause
This problem can occur if Windows NT is installed and the latest service pack is installed before any network services are installed. If the Srv.sys file is not present when the service pack is applied it is not updated because Update.exe updates only components that are installed on the Windows NT system. When Windows NT starts up after the network services have been installed from the original Windows NT CD-ROM, the original non-Service Pack 3 version of the Srv.sys file is used. To correctly work with the rest of the updated system files, the Srv.sys file must be updated to the same version as the installed service pack.
Resolution
Reapply the Windows NT Service Pack. "

After I repeated my procedures, this time making sure that I reload the last Service Pack after I loaded the 3com drivers, the error msg 7023 did not appear. !!!! So now I have a clean load on NT 4 Server.

In case this may help anyone else still trying to learn NT 4 Server load procedures, here is what I now do to get the clean load....

First make a CD on another computer, after obtaining all the following items off the internet :

The NT4 Server service packs, 3, 4, 5, and 6 from the Microsoft NT site.

In my case, Nvidia drivers, and 3com drivers for the 905C-TX NIC.
Also IE5.5 and IE 6 downloads.
Put all of these items, on a CD, each in its own folder.

Format your target HD with 3.9 GB.
Do not have any other partitions after this on the HD.
Load the NT CD. Use the 3.9 GB partition, NTFS.
Go thru the NT Setup.
Skip joining a network at this time. (The 3com NIC drivers I need, require at least NT Service Pack 4)
Join a workgroup as a standalone server.
Load NT 4 service pack 3 from your CD. Restart.
Load NT 4 service pack 4 from your CD. Restart.
Install Networking, as much as you can in spite of the
"no NIC" message.
Load the NIC drivers. Use the Control Panel, Network, Adapter,
location. Use Have disk. Point to the folder on the CD. In my case,
I had also a 3com disk from the PC vendor. I loaded this via
its GUI, at this point.
Restart.
Notice the error message at login about a service or driver not starting...
See Event viewer. Read error msg 7023.
Reload NT 4 service pack 4 from your CD. Restart.
Note that the error message does not appear now.
Try PING cmd to ping other computers hooked to your network. Should work.

Load Nvidia drivers from your CD. Restart.
Load NT 4 service pack 5 from your CD. Restart.
Load ie5.5 download from your CD. Restart.
Load NT Service Pack 6 from your CD. Restart.
Load IE 6 download from your CD. Restart.
(there can be some variation in this order, but it works for me.
The key thing is to reload the most recently loaded NT service pack after loading drivers for NICs, and display. )

Now there is a clean load.

Now I take the HD out as the Primary Master, and use another HD as Primary Master which has Win2k and Partition Magic loaded on it.
I install the NT4 Server HD into the Secondary Slave position.

I use Partition Magic to resize the NT 4 Server Partition to 7.9 GB.

Now I install the NT 4 Server HD back to the primary master IDE position and continue.

Now I join the ABC domain as a Standalone server.
Verify that you can see other members of the Domain on
the network.
Now I change the ID of the computer back to put it back to WORKGROUP, instead of the ABCDOMAIN.

Now I use the third party SW, Upromote, to promote the NT server to a Backup Domain Controller, which is my goal at this point.

So I finally am able to do what I want to do here.

Anyway, thanks very, very much for all the help, Allgamer, Bill and everyone else...
Ron....
