I recently discovered a bunch of handy tips for using Google (the BEST search engine). Here they are:
-------------------------
They have a few specific search engines for specialty subjects, like...
U.S. Government search (http://www.google.com/unclesam)
All things Linux (http://www.google.com/linux)
All things BSD (http://www.google.com/bsd)
& even some things Mac (http://www.google.com/mac)
------------------------
But if you use Netscape, then this is the coolest feature EVER. Add this link as a button on your Personal Toolbar, then you can just highlight text in the browser and simply press that button to do a Google Search. Very handy. Anyways, go here to check it out:
http://www.google.com/intl/en_extra/options/winnetscape.html
------cool tip--------
And this is just awesome...in the Google search box, if you type "link:URL" it will list all the sites that have links to that URL. For example, if I were to type "link:www.sysopt.com" you'd see that there is a lot of sites that link to SysOpt.
-------------------------
Also to search within a specific site, you can just add "site:domain" to your search word. Example, "DDR RAM site:www.tomshardware.com" will return links to all the places DDR RAM is mentioned at www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com)
--------last tip-------
Just type in any street address and Google will identify it as a location and give you a link to the map. I just tried with my address it worked. Tried again with just my street - city, state and it still worked. Not bad.

Thx Out. Very useful stuff. Too bad they don't have a feature similar to the netscape one for IE.

Well, they do have the Google Toolbar for IE. Don't know if it's as simple to use as the Netscape trick, but you can check it out here:

hmmmm, pathetic response to this post (no offense Gomer & Cyg) but I'll assume at least a handful of people can make use of some of these tips.
Now I surely can't be the only person here that still uses Netscape,...can I? I'm tellin' ya, Netscape users, you need that Google button on your toolbar. It's awesome. And for a twist on it check out this thread: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/003031.html
I figured out how to make the button open in a new window. So now while reading something on the web you can just highlight something of interest, hit the Google button, have the search results for it appear in another window. You then just keep reading your article, if necessary highlighting & Googling more things along the way. Then after you've completed reading the original article you can begin to sift through the windows of Google searches.
Maybe I'm just a geek, but I think this is way cool because what usually happens to me is I'll do a search on something while reading an article and end up getting lost in those search results never to finish reading what I started.
And I can hear it already....but NO I'm not fishing for a "at-a-boy" or whatever. I'm just thinking there's got to be at least one other person out there that's gonna find this as helpful as I do.

I use the quick search add-on for IE 5.0.
I just type in "goo" and the word/subject I'm looking for in the address bar and it takes off. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Also I've never had to use another search engine-Google is batting 1000!

I would like to make ONE correction:
the best search engine on the net is the world's largest metasearch.
http://www.webinfosearch.com
It searches ALL of the major engines and most of the minor ones too. It EVEN searches Google. Check it out. It's MY preferred search site.

Now I surely can't be the only person here that still uses Netscape,...can I? Yes you may be the last Netscrape user left. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I am still a WebFerret (http://www.zdnet.com/ferret/download.htm) user.

Well, I can't reach that site so I can't evaluate it. But even if it's great, there's still one more minor correction to be made...technically it's not a search engine. It might <u>utilize</u> other search engines, but it is not one. So 8^P

www.ferretsoft.com (http://www.ferretsoft.com)
No it is not a search engine but it is a program that does search up to 19 search engines!

I just did a search for jad1097 using both the WebFerret and Google and which one do you think turned up more results?
The Ferret got 60 hits using the "Remove Duplicate URL's" feature and Google only got 27 and then I have to dig through three flipping pages!
Daffy, your search engine only yeilded 8 hits?
I am still waiting to find a better way to search.
I am sure all these will work better than the others at searching different subjects but I like the Ferret.

Ahhh...but if you notice TWO things. first,
Webinfosearch automatically got rid of redundancies.
Secondly if you notice to the right on your results page...there are a bunch of links to all of the search engines which returned results. Yes, Google was one.
Just click on any of those and you're free to wade through THEIR results. It's truly a WONDERFUL thing man. All of his, all of yours and a few others!

P.S. I was reading up and webinfosearch is NOT just a MetaSearch, it ALSO has it's own built in search engine. I thought it was a metasearch only too.

Google ROCKS!!!, I seldom have to look beyond the 2nd page of results.
I installed the Google toolbar a couple of weeks ago, and I must say that it's awesome to have the Google search box always available. I did install the Google toolbar without the "advanced features". If installed, "Page Rank" and the "Category Button" return information to Google about your searches.
