Is my monitor going to live longer if I shut it off each night or should I just let it go to sleep? It seems to me a lot of things don't like cold starts.( Like power supplies, cars and fluorescent tubes to name a few.)

Generally they say its the cold to hot, hot to cold that wears parts out due to exansion/contraction of the parts.

i agree with Steves
and just for your reference
the only monitor that has died on me after 7+ years was Daytek 15"
and that's only cuz it was working on a bad Outlet with Inverted porality for 7+ years :p
but other than that, i've monitor as old as that one, and they are still working fine
I NEVER TURN OFF MY MONITORS, i just let them go to sleep mode
make sure is Sleep Mode, and not Standby Mode :t

I wish i was that fortunate AllGamer:( . In a period of less than 2 years I've had one 21" go bad on me, which i sent in for another one and now this one is acting up, and I had a 15" go out after having it for about 4 years :x

I have a 15" gateway monitor that has been turned on and off almost every day since 1993. It still works fine. I turn all of mine off overnite, but I only turn them on once per day maximum. It seems to work just like my televisions. I have a 20 inch tv that goes on and off once a day for the last 12 years, and no problems.
Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, but they are engineered to do this.

Well that's a good trick. Inverted polarity on an ac circuit? Maybe the plug was upside down. ;)

Got a 17" Viewsonic (model V773, I think... not home right now)... bought in mid-'92. Has been used daily ever since then, turned on and off at least once each day (excepting vacation time when no one was home), so it has had at least 3800 on-and-off cycles... takes a licking and keeps on ticking....

It was the wall
and the house was rented
so i didn't care to fix it for them
and the landlord didn't want to fix it for me
and i ran out of wall plugs
since having like 5 Power bar one after another is WAY overloading the wall lines, from the GOOD wall plug ;)
that wasn't my Favorite monitor anyways, so i didn't care much :p
that's why all of my Good stuff, went to the other wall which was Extremely overloaded,
it was 1 plug powering 4 PCs with 2 printers, routers, switches, etc, etc.
stereo, speraks, the TV and more...
so ..... well i guess you have a pretty good picture :p

For what it is worth, I have noticed that monitors that are left on all the time (like business monitors) tend to get washed out with age. I turn mine off when I'm not using them.

I turn mine off when I am not using it, even when my machine is on and I haven't had any problems "yet".

I've got a 15" cybervision, works great after 5 years. I turn it off once a day, everyday, and it's as good as new. Got an old Packard Hell 14, can't even tell you how old it is, still works if you can stand 640 x 480 res.:r
