Okay, my kids are fighting over time on the computer (becuase of homework) and I have decided to set up a network (in the same room) and am going to build another machine to network with the old one. What motherboard would you suggest with a P4 2 point "whatever" latest processor? Gaming would be a major concern and sharing of the cable modem connection would be a must. I assume that I will need 3 NIC's to achieve what I need and a router of some sort. Mainly though, I want to have a "state of the art" MB so that I can make full use of the network. I have a reputation of buying hardware and finding out after the ink dries on the credit card slip that I have bought archaic components!
I really want:
Great motherboard
Fastest processor
Superb graphics
Cable internet sharing (without Cox knowing I have 2 computers sharing the connection) ;)
$ is no problem!!
TIA,
Bill :t

-you can look at getting something like an Asus P4T533C + Rambus
-or you can go with this: http://tw.giga-byte.com/products/8iexp.htm matched with a 2.4Ghz p4 and DDR
-board has everything you need built in and not to expensive

The Gigabyte looks good with the Intel LAN built-in.
I'm wondering why you need 3 NICs, Bill. If you pick up a Linksys BEFRSR41 (about $70) and you have an Ethernet modem, you will only need patch cables. The modem plugs directly into the router WAN port and the PCs connect to the router's LAN ports. Simple.
Yep, get a router and your can hook up several computers to it and it acts as one connection, also helping in security. Cox will not care, or shouldn't. We have a small network at work with this exact setup and it works great.

If money is no problem go with the linksys router sys and get wireless. Since you're in the same room it would eliminate a lot of cabling. The systems are real easy to set up and very reliable; motherboard and processer mentioned sound good to me. I'm trying to upgrade to that money is no problem stage........where do I find that? :) Have fun with the new setup :) Also on a router network cox won't know since it only assigns an ip address to the router. The router assigns your internal lan addresses itself;)

Intel has a new DDR chipset coming out with 'official' PC2700 support. I would suggest you check that out for the board. Any 'B' Northwood (133MHz FSB) P4 s/b fine, might as well get the slowest / cheapest one, since it will still be plenty fast enough. I wouldn't recommend a RDRAM board right now. Once the dual channel DDR boards come out, RDRAM will not look very attractive (although I must admit, it still is the fastest right now).
