I got 2 friends that ditched the P3 450 for the cel's..not cuz of price, but cuz of the serial numbers. Now wit the UTICA thing goin, im not touchin a P3

Not sure about the rest. Also, all mobile PIIs have PSNs as well, so notebook owners beware.

Before the Media corrupted the meaning, a Hacker was a dyed in the wool computer enthusiast who would spend long hours hacking away at the keyboard. Learning and understanding the core of the system was the goal. Now I guess we call them Programmers, altough Hackers knew about writing efficient code for limited space environments.

We need a utility that will report if the Processor Serial Number is available after the Operating System has finished loading.

This will reveal if the BIOS "Disable PSN" is effective.

Also, since the BIOS scans for keyboard input (enter Setup, reset Defaults, etc.) could it be possible for an invader to mimic KB input and change things in the BIOS? Certainly "Chernobyl" gets in there somehow, somewhen.

Intels lil 'make shtuff easier' plan aint workin...its scaring people away, and it should. Im pretty sure there hasnt been one adamant praise of the PSN...and MANY MANY complants...if they cant listen to thier consumers now, what are they thinking??!

Holly s**t! As soon as I get some cash, Intel is out, with new celerons having the #, P3s having the #, even new P2s having the #, time to go to AMD. Does ABIT make Slot A boards?

As of now, only AsusTech, Biostar, FIC, Microstar, and Gigabyte are licenced to male Slot-A boards.

But the Athlon will soon be released in Slot-B format as well, which is compatable with the new 750 MHz, 1 Ghz and 1,5 ghz ALPHAs as well, which rocks. This means that you'll be able to run an Alpha with normal hardware & with cheap RAM, and still be able to run Linux on it.

Can't wait until I have a nice, clean ALPHA @ 1500 mhz (just imagine overclocking it!!!), and all without the dreaded PSN, and UCITA.

Keep an eye out for more WIntel alternatives!
