Don't feel too bad for CompUSA!

Back in 1999, I walked into one in the Twin Cities, MN, and picked up a couple of hundred dollars worth of computer software and went to a checkout. I had to wait in line for about 10 min. and when I went to pay with "American Express" Travelers Checks, they refused to take them. According to their store manager, it was their policy to only accept cash, credit card, or personal check. Needless to say, I put the software back, and walked out.

I have not gone into a CompUSA since and don't intend to start.

Sharder--

Scotter, the "air" you refer to is actually a chlorinated fluorocarbon, usually tetrafluroaethane.

A killer of the upper atmosphere.

Totally banned from the property of my company which covers 4 states and several overseas countries.

check the label.

You can get a small air compressor for the amount you mentioned and fill your tires and clean the computers too..

Yeah SoopaStar, I put it back on the shelf.

I was mad at the management/company and not the store employees that were just doing their job. If I'd left it at the counter, it would have given some poor shmuck, who had nothing to do with the situation more work. I just can't see doing something like that.

(I can be nice, friendly, and thoughtful at times! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Just don't expect it until you get it or see it from me! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif It can be RARE! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )

It's their loss! I went in a Compusa once and was not impressed! The prices were higher there then in the little Mom and Pop's store here in "Nowheresville, Missouri"!

CompUSA is in some kind of trouble. It's actually a Mexican outfit now. Apparently, a US Court ruled that the proclaimed richest man in Latin America bought the company through deceit and has to pony up several hundred million to the defrauded.

I was going to buy a Haitachi DVD ROM from them for $70 w/rebate. But I decided to pass. I'm still waiting for rebates from them from three years ago!

sharder8,

Indeed you are thougtful! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif good for you!
Most employees in the store that I went to seem pretty cool.

And yea the prices there are all top (jacked) msrp on almost every product. Sheesh even the software is just too overpriced.
I would shop there more often if they had better specials. And lower prices on brand name stuff.

DrVette:
Most canned air produced today is Ozone Safe. I think the government made it illegal to produce CFC-using products.

Say it ain't so? Well, according to these two articles, it is. oh well, I work for a major competitor to Compusa, and I can honestly say...If they want to shoot themselves in the foot, more power to them. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/7/17427.html

I know this is slightly off topic, but had to add it.

A few weeks ago the HD on my old computer died. [ http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif]

Anyway, I wanted to get one as cheaply as possible, you know, just to use for email and surfing. I mean it was a P100 machine with a 166mmx overdrive chip.

Anyway, I wanted to get one just big enough to run win95 on. So, I found one 600+ mb at a local mom and pop place. Now, you can imagine how old a 600 mb hd is anyway, right?

So, the guy tells me "well, I realize you don't want to put much money into it, so I'll give you a good price. How about $40 for the HD?" Can you believe that? Nice guy, huh?

Have a good weekend!

Sharder,

Gotta give ya credit for not making the employees do the work like that.

Actually, come to think of it, CompUSA is one of the few places I've seen Mac's retailed. Where else are they sold?

CompUSA sells COMPUTERS?? Since when?

I thought all they had was peripherals, supplies, & software...plus those proprietary toys people junk out when they get a real one!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Seriously, I'd hate to see them go down. Competition is what drives prices, and the others would all raise 'em shortly after. We saw this happen when Comp City died.

Also, even with all their drawbacks, they've still got the largest software selection in town!
And I've got a personal problem with the nearest competitor. Sorry, Paul, but after a major TV problem a few years ago, I DON'T shop Best Buy!

I'm all for competition too, Ed, but as I remember it was Comp USA that bought out and shut down Computer City

Computer City was going bankrupt. Tandy could not run a computer store profitably if they wanted to. That is also why Fry's bought Incredible Universe. Not all of the stores are going to be kept and converted, some of the lower-profit ones will be shut down. That is just good management of the new company. Don't blame that on CompUSA, blame it on Tandy.

Not to mension some of thier employees are total morons! My mom is so good at this stuff...

We walk into a compusa and we are looking at a 129 dollar printer(for my dad's laptop, nothing expensive).....this was 2 years ago...and a sales person walks up to us and tells us that there is another one that is just as good but a cheaper price...well we end up buying the second one...then all of a sudden the total comes to about 200 bucks. The lady said the printer was actually 179 or somehting like that and my mom says....."well a salesperson said that it was 129 like the other one". Well we walked out with a 180 dollar printer by only paying 130 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My mom has done that several times to them.....she even did it on the insurance for my scanner...hilarious stuff http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
