Hi...

Whenever I add any ram to my system over 256 mb, my system will freeze at post... ive tried 3 different types of ram, and I really want to add more!! A Single 256 stick will work, but if I take that out, or add my 512 or another 256, my system will hang on the post screen, (AMD Athlon 2100+) RAM : 5289435 (cant remember number :D) says Award Technologies and blah blah blah, you know that screen right?

I know where you're going with this but Win98 should still take up to (and including) 512mb ram. Also, note he said it hung at POST and doesn't even get to the OS loading.

scottweil4nd...
Have you tried that single stick of (256mb) ram in the other slots, just to make sure it isn't a defective mobo with only one good ram slot? Not really familair with your mobo, but does it take ram with only a single side of mem chips on the mem "board" or will it take mem boards with mem chips on both sides? Are you certain that the mem boards you have are compatible (e.g., E.C.C. vs non-E.C.C., etc.) with your mobo?

I agree, It may be a matter of double sided vs. single sided mem. Plus are any of them ECC? Your mobo may not suport ecc mem. IS it registered mem?

Hmm... i was just making sure he was not refering POST as some people does when they decribe the screen before Windoze starts up

so yeah basically i'm trying to find out for real if it's even getting there or not at all

Thats the post screen alrighty. So AllGamer, now you know where he's stuck at. I still think its ram incompatability. As the 512mb wont work in his dimm1 which DID work with other 256mb stick. If he has 256mb in dimm1 and other 256 in dimm2 hung again. Are these two sticks of 256mb different? They must be! There in lies the answer I think.

Can you give us the ram id. Is there a sticker on it. If not what does the chips say on them?:t

the 512 has stuff on both sides is on both sides... Okay... now you've got me confused too... just exactly what ram works in what slots, in other words, just what combinations do work okay for you? Which stick(s) -- with ID or part numbers -- works in which memory slot -- your mobo should have the memory slots numbered starting with either 0 or 1, and going up from there.

Also, you have to be more explicit when describing exactly what ram you have... does it not have a part number or serial number, or any identfying markings on each stick? Does each stick of ram have little chips on both sides of the board, or just on one side? Does the stuff that works have chips on one side only, and the stuff that doesn't work have chips on both sides?

Do you have your motherboard user manual? Does it not give specification for what ram is to be sued with this motherboard?

Without more info, we are all just taking wild a** guesses what your problem is caused by.

PS: Non-ECC means you mobo does not work with "error-correcting" (ECC) ram. This type of ram is usually used for file, web and database servers, but I have seen it used in home systems (my old Dell XPS D300-15 came with ECC SDRAM).

EDIT PS:
From Soyo website... KT333 Dragon Lite section...
"Memory Description
Three DDR 2.5V DIMM sockets support up to 3GB

From Crucial memory website:

jmichna note -- I'm a bit surprised that Crucial lists three sticks of ECC ram as compatible... usually Crucial are very accurate... if I were buying, though, I'd stay away from ECC just because the mobo vendor says so...

jmichna- does it say it'll take double sided mem? I thought it wouldnt use ecc. Twas just a hunch! We still need to know if your mem is ecc though scottweil4nd. Just give us the chip #'s and we'll take care of the looking it up. Gots to know though if it is ecc or double sided before we can help.:) :t

I don't know... it's not my mobo (it's scottweil4nd's mobo), and the owner's manual doesn't say anything re two-sided. The Crucial website surprised me by listed ECC as compatible, but the Soyo website says no. The Crucial site info is usually accurate.

Maybe once scottweil4nd knows what he's got (both ID'ing what works and what doesn't work) we'll be able to figure this out.

Any other Soyo KT333 Lite owners have DDR SDRAM upgrade experience with this mobo? Please chip in....

the ram does have data chips on both sides...

Kingston 512 DDR 2100
KVR266x64c25/512

a 256 mb ddr (chips on both sides) works in all slots

sounds like you'll have to Exchange them for those Single side ones only

Well if both are double sided and the 256 works in all slots its either.
1} your mobo only suports single sided 512mb-I think this was a issue with another mobo someone posted here.

2} its ecc. Are you SURE the 512mb is not ecc? How about registerd or unreg.?

I have no idea what ECC is, but in any case, its got ram chips on both sides (512 mb DDR)

Thats your mem right there right? Thats not ecc or it would say that. Should be unregisterd too. They charge extra for it. But it is 64mx64....Can your mobo run that? What is the sticks specs that work?
