The case I purchased didn't have a front audio connection though it did have a place for one so I wired my own. What I put together works, but I'm curious if I actually did it correctly or not and left wondering what power (pin 4) and REF (pin 3) does.
The header on the motherboard lists 10 pins
1 mic
2 ground
3 REF
4 Power
5 Front Audio(R)
6 Rear Audio(R)
7 Reserved
8 - blank
9 Front Audio(L)
10 Rear Audio(L)
Default configuration is to have 5-6 and 9-10 bridged connecting front and rear audio.
Stereo jacks have 3 areas on them that a jack can provide a connection to, the tip, a middle section and the area furthest from the tip.
In trial and error I found that I had to splice 5-6 and 9-10 together (if I still want to be able to use my rear connectors also), then provide that signal to the front jack.
I connected the wires so that Left (pins 9-10) connects to the tip, and the Right (pins 5-6) connects to the middle and the Ground (pin 2) connects to the area furthest from the tip. This works although I can't use my digital speakers on the back and analog headset on the front, also the back isn't muted when I connect to the front.
The microphone (pin 1) I found could be connected to either the tip or the middle of the jack with the ground (pin 2) on the area furthest from the tip.
what I have works, but I have to wonder if it might work better. Anyone have any insight?
