To My Esteemed Colleagues:
I'm building a system and would GREATLY appreciate your input.
If you were to purchase a CD-ROM and a CD-RW today, which would you buy?
I'll be running a Iwill KK266 mobo with 1.2 GHz T-Bird, ATA100 IBM HD, 512 MB PC133 SDRAM, Win98se.
Thx!

go w/ either the tdk velo-cd or the plextor cdrw cause they both have burn proof tech.
as for the cd-rom, u ever think bout going w/ a dvd drive there prices are falling fast u can get the aopen1640pro for like i think $130 these days. aopen has awesome support seeing as i jjust blew one up w/ a crappy cdr that exploded but aopen didnt even blame it on the cdr co. and is repairing my drive for free.
just sumthin to think bout!

If you're not really gaming, I'd pop for a DVD. Maybe you can use a video card that drives the DVD through hardware and comes with a DVD player! DVD ROMS are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not into watching DVDs (movies) on my computer, and wouldn't I need to purchase DVD media or will it use CDRs and CDRWs?
Thx!

Well Brangwen, I've recently made the jump and did a lot of research and I think I got some great stuff. I got the Plextor 16x10x40 cd-wr and a Toshiba 6702B cd-rom. They are fast and they are very quiet. It's a sweet combo.
Have fun!

Thx, RockyDog. If I may ask, from where did you make these purchases?
Thx.

The Plextor I got from PCMall.com and the Toshiba from CompuVest.com. The prices were as good as any around.
Buy good stuff..... you won't regret it in the end.
Take Care.

Plextor are generally considered to be the Rolls Royce of CD-r/CD-rw.
If I was purchasing either right now, I would make sure that the cd-rw was supported by CloneCD.
There is a program available called CDspeed that gives the actual performanc eof both(I think) cd and cd-rw. Search on the net. this can be important if you wish to copy audio cd on the fly, or even just rip them.

Thanks, Lebo and everyone else for the posts!
I went with a Plextor PlexWriter™ 16/10/40A
and a Creative Lab 52X CD-Rom

PS: You only live once, and how many times can my wife kill me? Does this mean I'll have to find a job soon?!?
