Here's what I want to do, I'm just not sure how....

I have a site at geocities right now (http://www.geocities.com/volken73/) I am trying to redirect it to the Domain name I just bought www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com)

So basically when someone goes to www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) they are seeing the content that is hosted on geocities.

anyone have any ideas on where I can do this for FREE (at least for now)... I am not really looking to pay for hosting just yet, maybe later.

Thanks in advance,

Gary

Check with the people that sold you the domain name. The redirect has gotta come from there.

I don't have my own domain but I do have a free redirect from www.bigfoot.com (http://www.bigfoot.com) so when anyone types in www.bigfoot.com/~outpatient (http://www.bigfoot.com/~outpatient) they get redirected to where my page actually is on my @Home server.

Here's a free one: http://www.kickme.to
also do a search on google, there's a lot of free re-directs available.

OutPatient,

Actually I need one that does the exact opposite of Bigfoot.com

When someone goes to www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) I need them to be redirected to www.geocities.com/volken73 (http://www.geocities.com/volken73) or in bigfoots case www.bigfoot.com/~gphughes (http://www.bigfoot.com/~gphughes)

Have any other ideas...

Gary

No you don't. That's what I'm trying to say.

None of my web content is at bigfoot.com, it's all at members.home.com/0utpatient. So when people go to the Bigfoot URL they get kicked to my web site at members.home.etc,etc.

You have a similar situation. Your web site content is actually located at Geocities.com, but you want people to see by typing in www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) , right.

So basically, there needs to be a single HTML page at www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) and it needs to the named 'index.htm' so it will load automatically whenever someone goes there. They never actually see the page because all it will do is kick them over to your site at Geocities.com.

Isn't that what you need to do? If so, check with Go Daddy Domains about how to go about that. (I scanned their site but could not find much info and you need to login to get more information.)

Outpatient,

thanks for the reply. I agree with your idea about putting an index.html page on www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) but Godaddy will charge there normal hosting prices for that. I'm trying to go the Free route. Part of the reason Godaddy was so cheap is because they don't give you all the hosting options. I might have learned the hard way to pay a little extra next time.

I am in the process of trying Zoneedit.com, as I think this might work for what I need.

BTW: for future reference Godaddy might not be the best choice for buying domain names. Anyone know how I can transfer this to a different registrar in the future, or is that possible?

Thanks again, I'll get this thing licked http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

you might want to move your domain to virtualave.net! There you get your site hosted for free (50MB I think) and people can go to www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com)
You might even add a script in your index.htm that redirects people to your other site but only if traffic is too high. Neat hm?

I saw that too... However before I drop my $20 I'd like to see if I can get this Zoneedit.com thing to work. It looks promising, however .....

I entered all my info into Zoneedit heres what I have... http://www.geocities.com/volken73/zoneedit.jpg

the destinations I have listed work perfet alone, and I have switched the name servers on godaddy like they say to NS2.Zoneedit.com, etc. Now look what I am getting at http://www.hughespc.com - page not found.

Now What, dodaddy said it could take 24 - 48 hours to complete the name server change but now they don't even have my page parked like it was yesterday...

any suggestions,

Gary

Am I missing something.... On my computer it shows up as "page cannot be displayed" error.

What's the deal, are you sure you got it to work & How?

Always another question http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yeah! When I click on www.hughespc.com (http://www.hughespc.com) it bounces me right over to http://www.geocities.com/volken73/ and displays your page. Perfect.

If it's not working for you, then I think that means your ISP's DNS servers are current as they could be. This is typical. Various ISPs refresh the servers as various intervals. I'd give it 24 hours then maybe ask your ISP what's up.

But it works from here, behind @Home's servers.

Sweet, thanks for all your help ouTpaTienT. I am going to try it on a friends computer to see if it shows up there. Although I hope it will show up on my ISP with another day or so.

BTW: I love this forum. I have been "listening" in for the last year or so, and I love what I see. I may not post all the time, but I'm here at least every day checking out the posts. Everyone is so helpful here. Hopefully one of these days I can return the favor...Thanks,

Gary

I have this at namezero.com I got a domain name from them and when you enter www.mydomainname.com (http://www.mydomainname.com) it goes right to my page located on my ISP's server. They have it free with a banner or $25 a year with no ads. They also give you an email domain or something. You can set up numerous email accounts such as xxxxxx@mydomainname.com you can also forward all the mail to your regular email account if you want to.

<u>delta</u>, I was investigating the forums at Go Daddy and they have a redirect service now availible. Just came online in the last couple of days. Of course (surprise, surprise) it'll cost <FONT COLOR="green">$$$</FONT c>. But it's not too bad, $20 a year.
