Sorry if this is an old question to some of you since RTCW came out almost a year ago, but I don't see many forums about it here.

Anyone here played it? Is is any good???

Anyone waiting for the upcoming expansion pack for it?

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

I like and still play the original DOS version of Wolf3D. Where to get the "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" ?...what websites?, or can it be bought local, like maybe Walmart...Office Max/Depot ect?...( this area is very limited to computer places like Compuserve or Best Buy ect.) and about how much?. Is it a large game?..too big to D/L on a 56K modem?

Definitely. Although someone might be nice enough to wait that long on a P2P (if that's what you're referring to). Walmart probably has it for a good price.

I went up to Myrtle Beach today for 'other reasons', and stopped in at Sams, Office Depot, Office Max...none had the game, but a salesman at Sams said they did have it recently...onsale because it was a slow seller!!. I then went to Walmart (where I grocery shop anyway) and they had it reduced for sale!! I saved over $6 bucks from the online price at Best Buy!, not including shipping. Now, (sence I am not a true gamer), I gotta figure out if I need to install the whole thing, or does it work off of the CD. I just got home, and haven't had time to read the instructions...

Thanks for the input...

Well you install the whole thing, usually you can get a patch from somewhere like gamecopyworld.com that let you run it without a CD. Sometimes this makes the games run faster by not having safedisc running in the background.

So far excellent, just beat third chapter :) Playing in the dark alone is always fun. Brings back memories of how creepy Half Life was when I played that.

Thanks BadBadNeil...

Are you telling me that I will need something else to run this game..like a patch of somekind?...and what is safedisk?...

as you can see, I am certainly not on top of todays games. I have not played any games (really) sence Wolf3D came to me on my first 286 I bought to do some special things with Ham Radio. (I do have a couple of golf games that I play from time to time), but these are on my hard drive completely...no patches that I know of.

If you have time, please explain, 1) what is a 'patch' doing with freshly purchased software?...Why would I need anything extra to run the game?...I know that some games, maybe 6 tp 8 CDs to the game, require a certain CD to be put in the drive to play certain aspects of the game... Is Return to Castle Wolfenstein setup like this?... I was under the impression that the game was loaded to a specific folder and played from there...right?...wrong??...how about some of you gamers giving out with some simple instructions!

Im loving it. Even though I seem to always be lost on the single-player mode, the multiplayer is sweet. Its tough to play it when I have other sweets such as mohaa and BF1942, but it competes up there with 'em. and the expansion pack??? dam* im already saving up for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Spearhead expansion pack, Halo for PC, Doom III, and a few others. i will get it. before Halo or Doom III:)

RTCW's MP mode is so much fun and so adictive. I've played other games like Warcraft 3, Dungeon Siege, and Mafia which are all great games, but in the end I always go back to Wolf's superb multiplayer mode. Whoever still hasn't played this game and has the slightest curiousity about it should definitely get it or atleast download the demo.

Well typically when a game comes out there are some bugs left uncaught. The company that releases the game will then release patches to fix any bugs.

The patch I was telling you about really doesnt fix anything in the game it just lets you play without a cd. If you want to find if there are any patches available for the game itself I would go to the developers website and see if any are listed. Most likely there are.

Wolfenstein is a single CD unless you get the Return to Castle Wolfenstein Game of the Year edition, it comes on 2 CDS.

Heres how installing works.
1) You pop the ol' cd in.
2) It installs the program on your computer somewhere or where you specify. (typically most modern games are between 600-1200MB installs.)
3) You play the game with the CD in the drive. (unless you get the no cd fix like i mentioned above).

Thats pretty much it, cake!

Bovon may not need to use a no-cd patch or fixed .exe for this title. The retail copy I purchased didn't include any protection that required the CD in the drive to play. Still, it would be a good idea to get the latest update for it. Bovon, you may want to change the default controls (which are always a hassle). Strafing is key in all FPS's, so definitely get rid of that turn left, turn right garbage in your keyboard controls. Use the left and right arrow keys to strafe. Always helps when you've got atleast three buttons on that mouse too. Happy huntin' those Nazi's.

Great...as you can tell by now, my weakest points are running software (applications). Hardware or setup is usually not a problem...but like most hard headed people, I don't learn how to run applications without a hassle.

I don't play games very often, but I do like Wolf3D and have been wanting to try the new Return to Castle Wolfenstein sence it came out, but just never got around to doing it. (I also want to migrate to Win2K, which Wolf3D probably will not run...needing a DOS environment to run.)

This one I bought yesterday is the 2 CD version...so...I should be in good shape.

I am in the process of upgrading this machine to a much larger HDD so it will be a few days before I will load the game. Getting ready to load the game, and getting some input first will help a lot.

One of my problems here is...desktop space. I use a small IBM keyboard that does not have the keypad at the right end...but does have the up/down..right and left arrows. Using a keyboard for game play has always been a hassle for me too...I don't know the keyboard (or type either) like the younger people..and at my age now...I don't believe thats gonna happen either, LOL... Joysticks and mouse work better for me when playing a game...

I used to have a 3 button mouse..gave it to my neice...but I can get another if that will help.

I think you guys have pretty well answered the questions. I have seen others that have games that need to have the CD in the drive to play...sometimes they have to wait for the CD to spin up for them to continue...that was a big turn off for me...I don't want to wait on anything...if its hard drive space thats needed...I can do that, I would flip out if I were playing a game, and in the "heat of battle"...every dang thing comes to a screeching stop while the CD loads some more of the game.

I have never seen it actually played...but I bought my Son-in-law a huge golf game a couple of years ago...lotsa $$$ and it has about 7 or 8 disks. He has to slip in different disks at times to play..but I believe this has to do mostly with the different golf courses.

I'll definately get the no-cd fix if its necessary to play this game without needing the cd in the tray to play it..

When you do get and if your daring enough to try the keyboard to do all the work (instead of joystick) which will give you much better access typically unless your pretty darn good with that joystick.

If you do decide to use the keyboard think about placement so you have easy access to most functions.

I typically use:

up,down,left, right arrows = movement and strafe.
delete = reload
enter = open use
end = use item
page up / page down = items
right ctl = crouch
shift = fast walk run
right mouse = jump
left mouse = attack
third mouse = second attack function
mouse move = look
mouse scroll = change weapon
adn the rest vary by game.

Of course everyone has their own setup :) To do all that wtih a jobstick you'd need either a lot of buttons or a combo keyboard / joystick which is messy.

Just few tips

I just wanted to chime in on my addiction. RTCW is a great single player game (Indiana Jones meets Commando). They got me hooked on a demo from a magazine. A week later I'd gone out and bought the game.

I thought it was all over when I brought down the evil king and I didn't play it for a couple of weeks. One afternoon I wandered into the online section and gave it a try. Holy smokes, what a great, balanced, team oriented game.

I'm a regular online (kingofpain) and highly recommend the game to anyone. I'm not even a FPS kind of game player, but this one's got me.

You can find mods with proximity mines, games that allow you to drag wounded players out of the line of fire, high speed games - more or less whatever you're looking for.

Nothing blows up as good as a 30+ player game of Marketgarden though!

I thought the game was going to be ****.
But after a friend bought it and I played his.
I went straight out and bought a copy of my own.
The MP is great and I still go online to play.
Can't wait for the sort off addon(Of course you don't need the orig to play the addon)
But it's still going to be great(Now that they have included BOTS, great for small LAN gaming)
(Which is where I fall into)
Roll on December.
