At every startup (just after loading Tray and Office S'cut bar) if CD is in the drive, Explorer (or someting else) acesses it making the boot very slow as too much of resources is allocated for this task.

I did disable "auto insert notify" and I made sure no CD-related app runs at startup (eg CD Wizard) through msconfig.

Any other ideas?

Look in your BIOS and change boot sequence to C,A.

I'd pop out the cd. It can also make opening my computer slow due to windows having to read what in the cd drive. If the drive is empty it just passes over looking at the drive.
