Wanted-Virus checker

I like to download various software from the internet, but I'm afraid that one day that I might come across a virus. Is there any kind of virus checker or virus scanner that I can download from the internet for free? What would you recommend? Thanks,

I've used it for awhile now with no probs. Simple to use and it's FREE.
