Question about domain names?

What if someone has a name I want and it's about to come up for renewal, and what if they don't renew it? How can I jump on it before I lose it again? There seems to be no way to call "dibs" on a name.

I think there's a six day grace period after expiration (not sure though). I guess the only option is to nab it right then and hope no one else is doing the same.

Is there a place where you can register a name and have them e-mail you when it is avaiable (I thought I've seen something like this before)
