I am interested in purchasing a new video card! I currently have no card....but video memory on the MB is 16mb with S3 Pro Savage chipset/adapter. My pc has an AMD Athalon 1.4 with 512mb RAM. Please suggest a card for me that is compatible with Win XP. I read that I may need to disable the video memory on the motherboard before installing card, as well as delete display adapter??

For a 1.4ghz Athlon the best card would prolly be a 128mb Gf4 ti4200, any better than that and you wont get the most out of the card due to the slow CPU
If you were packin real high end system though ti4600 and Radeon 9700 would be da schitt! :r

Yes I would reccomed a Geforce 4 ti 4200
Also, yes you will need to disable onboard Video in the BIOS.

The GeForce 4 Ti4200 64 Mb is actually faster than the 128 Mb Model.

Yep the 64mb version has faster memory, but the 128mb benches lower.;)

Sorry to say this, but your wrong.
Come to Toms Hardware to see that the GF4 Ti4200 64 Mb beats the GF4 Ti4200 128 Mb version in all the benchmarks!! :p

It would be good to know what you use your PC for.
If you like to brag about benchmark scores, go for the GeForce.
If you like the best graphics display, most features, and best multi-monitor support, look into the Matrox Parhelia.
No, it doesn't run 3dMark as fast as some other cards, but it does play every game out there at a good rate, looks great doing it, and will run 3 monitors (you haven't gamed till you've done it in triplehead surround mode!).
It's also the best 2D card around, great for CAD, photo editing, and any other desktop app you might use.

A gainward Ti4200 (650xp) Runs stable at 308/608 and it kicks ***. I haven't tried higher than that. Also the 128mb will be better for the future..:) :D

:-) well thank you for the input people! I am mostly interested in 3D games graphics. But i am willing to spend for a nice card and was looking at the 9700 Radeon.....but Since you suggest the ti 4200 I will go that direction :-) ty again for the help! I will be back for installation support soon, hehe!

Depends on your motherboard. Look at your Motherboad manual and it should say if it has an AGP Slot. It most likely should.
All of the Ti4200-4600 are all AGP.

09-27-2002, 11:25 PM
You will need AGP for that card. Do you have an AGP slot?
Bigjakkstaffa

If youve got the AGP slot - DEFINITLEY
...dont settle for retarded PCI technology bleuch :(

What i meant was if you run a ti4200 on anything slower on a 1.4ghz tbird your not getting max potentiak outta the card ;)

I know what you meant, but a 1.0 Duron sill makes a rocket of a PC. IMO, anything over a 1.5GHz CPU is overkill.

For a Ti series GF4, a 1.4GHz processor is indeed slow. I have a XP1700+ paired with a Ti4400 and my processor is also not taking full advantage of the card. I'm hoping to change that when AMD releases there 333MHz processors, that along with upgrading my PC2100 to PC2700 chould make my Ti4400 work to its fullest potential.

So did we ever find out if upinya has an AGP slot or not? If he is stuck with only PCI upgradability, is the geforce 4 MX 440 PCI the best option? Did ATI ever come out with a Radeon 9000 PCI? Hopefully his current motherboard has the requisite AGP slot and he can live happily ever after with his new Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (or at least until the Geforce 5 is released  )

Is there such a beast as a 1.5GHz T'Bird? I thought they stopped at 1.4GHz and then the XP took over!
Please feel free to Enlighten me if I'm wrong. :p

1.4 is the fastest tbird you can get... The 1.5 might be an Overclocked speed.

Opk's is indeed overclocked from 1.4ghz
And i didnt say 1.4ghz was slow!!
I said the 1.4ghz is too slop to fully utilise at ti4400 or above and that ti4200 is the best card for that speed and also that anyone below 1.4ghz will not be running a ti4200 at its full potential... jebus cripes :(
I have a 1.4ghz Tbird and find it a lil bit slow myself, if i were to buy new 2ghz/2000+ would be the minimum id aim for... not to say 1.4 is slow, but its by no means blisteringly fast...
