I have a strange problem with a Gigabyte 5ax board- maybe someone can help?

I have now installed two different sound cards (first a Turtle Beach trpez plus card, now a Creative Audigy Platinum ex), only to get the same problem- a tinny sort of sound when playing samples of say a piano, but less noticeable when playing music. This problem has occurred under both Win 98 and Win 98 SE. The PC has 132mb RAM installed.

I have a feeling that the problem is IRQ or DMA related. No IRQ conflicts are being reported in Device manager, but there are no free IRQ slots at all.

The other possible explananation may be an incorrect BIOS setting.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
MacTheAxe

Welcome to SysOpt!

I hate to belabor the obvious, but have you checked the speaker connections or tried headphones? The only thing common to the two sound setups is the speakers, correct?

Do you get the same sound if you use a walkman Head set?

TO Bipolar Bill:
Thanks for that. I dismissed the idea at first, as the speaker system is new .However, on reflection, I thought it was worth doing a proper check. Guess what? The input socket on the amp is slightly too large for the jack plug, causing replay problems.

So it was worth checking- it sounds a lot better now I have doctored the plug slightly to fit. Also, I originally had a splitter plug in the amp socket (to share the speakers between two systems) and this was not really a good idea- unless I can get a proper switched one, so I have dispensed with that as well.

I guess that'll teach me to assume the problem is always something complicated!

To Allgamer-

Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried that, but in view of the above (see reply to Bipolar Bill), I think that the sound on the headset would probably be perfect.

thanks again.
