I had a smartlink 5634pcw modem on wxp that was not working correctly, think it just quit, would not connect. Then I tried a amr modem wxp would not recoqanize it. Anyone ever install a amr modem? I have a ga 7vtx mainboard. Maybe suggestion on a new one, cant get any high speed in my area so I stuck with dialup.

Have you checked in bios to see if the modem is enabled. The amr drivers should install with the motherboard drivers.

No, the amr modem is aftermarket. The motherboard did not come with a modem on board. I bought a amr modem to install in the amr slot on the mainboard.

Hmmmm... I haven't tried to install an amr device yet, but on the few boards I have seen with an amr modem it is treated like an onboard modem when an amr modem is installed. You will just have to reread the documentation that came with the board and modem. Check the manufactures web site and see if there is any support or XP drivers available.

I just thought of something else to check. You said your other modem just quit. Perhaps the com port it is using is at fault. See if you can assign the modem to another com port and use the modem feature in control panel to auto detect the modem. Modem installation is aways a hassle it seems to me.

Well on the other modem not the amr it didnt just quit, I should have said it was taking 20 to 30 seconds before it would break the dial up connection. It is still working just takes that long to dissconnect. The amr modem I bought didnt come with drivers, just modem. Teck where I bought it said just install and xp will find drivers for it, not the case. It was really cheap modem 8$ so I thought I would just try it. The board didnt come with a modem on board Im sure of that, just a amr slot I e-mailed the to see what they say.

I think the tech is right about that not needing other drivers. That is supposed to be one of the advantages of the amr interface. Personally I shy away from really cheap modems. I have had good luck with Conexent, Rockwell, Motorola and of course US Robotics if you can afford them. Intels are the worst in my experience. Win/modems can be a pain in the ****.

But even if it's an After Market AMR modem, you still need to go into the BIOS to Enable the Modem option

that's what the AMR slots are for :t

As the others said modems are a real PAIN ! Lucent and Conexant seem to install fairly easy. I wouldn't try PC-Tel if they were free.

Ok I see what everyone means about going into bios. I didnt know that about pctel modems, it was just something to try to get to work, if its to much trouble I will forget about it.

huh?!?!

Going to the BIOS is really easy

it's when your PC starts

hit the combo keys required

once inside find the hardware options

and enable the AMR or Modem, whichever your BIOS reads :t

how hard can that be? :p
