How many computers have this problem and which operating systems do they all use?
How was the system arranged before the router was put into use?
You do mean that you cannot send files, don't you?

The reason for that is that you will have to enable DMZ for the PC you want to be able to send files
or find EXACTLY which ports are required
if you use a NEW yahoo, yahoo will let you do it without a problem via port 80

but MSN and AOL needs special config
MSN config = 1863 + others, check link for details

AOL config = 5190 + others, check link for details

Geez, AG - there's no reason why he can't send things out. Could you clarify the question before you go haywire, please? That is, of course, unless you can read minds.

well.... after dealing with cust over the phone day in and day outs for years
you kinda starts reading mind, specially something as obvious as the above question :p
so yeah i'm pretty sure he's pondering why he can't send/receive files via those.
yes the same problem happens if the ports are not open at either side.
i've seen that prenty of times at home/work/customers :t

I don't think putting your pc in the DMZ is a good answer. Sure to temporarily host or play a game is fine, but there are plenty of resources to help get the ports mapped correctly so you can completely avoid using the DMZ.
A good place to start is http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/app_port_list.htm
Assuming you have a DI-604 or similar router, you need concern yourself with the virtual server and applications sections. I'm not saying the DMZ won't work but understand you are opening all ports (well over 60000) up to the outside WAN.
Also, you need to know that UPnP could be causing the problem, especially with MSN. This feature is designed to allow network components to work together with little or no effort but due to a security risk, many people have disabled this feature. All of this information is documented so I won't regurgitate it and try and pass it on as my own. Check the following link and scroll down to UPnP NAT Transversal FAQ and do what I did, read.

Hope this helps!

Madtripper, you are of course right about using DMZ being a bad idea for long terms
BUT... if you add up ALL the ports you need to Open for all the Apps you need to use
then that adds up to having a full brown open firewall also
That's why the BEST solution is to only use those Programs that you can Modify the ports at which they connect
good example Yahoo messenger, or ICQ
updated version of both with practically let you set anything you want
but MSN and others alike are still stuck with the full wide random range
