Gotta like free stuff that works and makes life easier. Check this out:
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

Easy to set up and use and it's free. What else could you ask for?

I was reminded on another BBS to make sure to run VNC behind a firewall or at least use really tough passwords(Thanks, Bill). Mine's running behind a LinkSys cable/dsl router and has a tough password. One of my favorite password schemes is to take a word or phrase that's easy for me to remember, and then find the key that's above and to the left of it on the keyboard. For instance (and this is NOT one of my passwords) if I take "Trinitron" and type in the keys above and to the left, it comes out as 548h8549h. Try guessing that one. After a while, you just get the sequence in your head and you don't have to think about it any more. I know way too many folks who use "cats" or "kats" as a password. Even "cats" becomes dq5w when using the offset method. Still too simple, but tougher to crack than "cats".

One other point. If you're using Win2k Pro or WinNT 4.0 Workstation you should always lock the computer (Ctrl-Alt-Del=>Lock Workstation) before leaving it for any length of time. That way, if anyone does come in through VNC, they still have to unlock the workstation. Just make sure you use different passwords for VNC and your workstation.

cool!
I was looking for something like this too!
I especially like that you don't have to install anything on the client computer. Just run the little program!
Very nice!
That's why I didn't use PC Anywhere because you have a huge and bulky installation on the client TOO!

I use a little program called Remote Administrator from www.famatech.com. (http://www.famatech.com.) I love it. Have been usign it since version 1.1. I think the screen refresh is better than VNC and you can encrypt the datastream, tell it how many colors you want the client screen to come in as (16, 256, or 65000), and oodles of other stuff.

I have to admit, I like SoopaStar's suggestion even more than VNC. It allows data encryption and NT authentication and is considerably faster than VNC. The only minor drawback is that it isn't free. It's $35 for a server/client combo. Still vastly less expensive than pcAnywhere and more secure than VNC. Good link, SoopaStar.

I use PCAnywhere everyday. Not too bad, but it can sometimes cause the computers to crash that we log onto. And anything free is better than paying for it, PCA is very expensive!
