Hello,
I have (had) a pentium computer that doesn't boot anymore. It gets to windows (98), but no desktop, and pops up a window that there is no mouse attached. During the bootup, keyboard input also is not accepted. I can't get to the bios setup or to the boot menu. Mouse and keyboard work fine on another PC.
Is this likely a failure of something on the motherboard or due to some error in the windows drivers? I don't think the problem is related to the bios? Because of the keyboard input, it seems more like a hardware problem.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Gerhard

i've had that happen to me. the keyboard actually damaged the motherboard and I lost all input. You can try a usb mouse/keyboard and see if they work.

Welcome to SysOpt! :t
it sounds like a Typical lost of Com1/Com2 or PS/2 configuration in your BIOS
go into the BIOS, and see what is listed for Com1/Com2 and PS/2
see if they are enabled or in Auto, or see whatever address they might have
for example
3F8/IRQ4
or something like that
then also check the Wires connection inside your mobo see if they are loose or something

The BIOS problem sounds encouraging, but problem is I can't get into setup because there is no response from to keyboard input during bootup. Any other way of accessing the BIOS? It's not possible to flash a new BIOS without getting to DOS?
Thanks,
Gerhard

no and no way.
Hmm... i very much doubt USB keyboard will work in this case
it seems like your PS/2 port really died on the mobo
OH! YET 1 more chance for you to recover
CLEAR THE CMOS!
use the Jumper on the Mobo :t
remove all NIC, Sound, Modem, ETC
and see if that will help you get back into the BIOS ;)

I attempted booting to a DOS with a floppy, but still didn't get any keyboard response. I also didn't think a USB mouse would work being no drivers were installed. Maybe with USB drivers don't need to be installed? USB was an optional item for the MB, so I really couldn't have tried it. I wasn't sure how to do the CMOS jumper; checked the MB manual and didn't see anything about that.
I decided its time to retire this systeem. Luckily, I was able to salvage a lot of the components to upgrade a Pentium for my in-law's. Thanks to everyone who posted to this thread and provided their advice!
