Is the USRobotics Sportstter modem a "hardware" modem? When I stick it in a system a few days from now, will I be able to use the standard 28.8 modem driver?
Thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave NDD 03-06-2001, 03:03 PM You didn't say what model you gonna buy ... next time place some spec ! Generally - PCI modems allocate virtual COM, usually COM3/COM4, and these COMs are not supported natively by DOS ... BUT - several modems use DOS emulation, and do it very nice (Motorala SM56, Creative ModemBlaster, for example) ... Best Regards ... daveleau 03-07-2001, 08:27 AM Sorry, I thought there was only one type of USR Sportster modems (ISA 28.8 or 33.6). It is not a full length ISA card. What I am asking is if it is a hardware modem. I have run into a Compaq ISA modem that would not work under Win2K with the standard generic modem drivers b/c it was not a hardware modem. Thanks Dave gr8vfr 03-07-2001, 11:27 AM 28.8 is quite an old modem speed. With the limited info. and being an ISA modem. My guess is yes it will work as hardware. I am guessing but you have a DOS based program that needs to dial out with out the use of Windows? If this is the case an external modem or a non-win-modem will work for you. wyvrn 03-07-2001, 11:45 AM I believe the sportster line is all hardware. I know that USR has a line of "wimmodems" that are generally cheaper. I was not aware that there were ISA winmodems, I was under the impression a controller-less modem had to be PCI. skuz 03-07-2001, 02:38 PM Wyvrn, I am affirmative there ARE ISA winmodems. These Winplagues are invading. wyvrn 03-08-2001, 06:03 AM Ok well then I learned something new today. I still think those Sportsters are harware based though, unless they changed something. justy 03-08-2001, 08:22 AM I installed an ISA sportster for a friend recently. It had a flash upgrade utility to get it upto 115K. I'll have a look at the model next time I've got a chance and post back. You might be able to flash yours! Plus I've got access to the drivers. All the best, Justy. Oops... Forgot to mention, that this was a hardware modem! [This message has been edited by justy (edited 03-08-2001).] wyvrn 03-09-2001, 12:39 AM I had a USR Sportster 56k external that was not recognized in Win2k, it came up as a 28.8. I just downloaded the WinNT .inf file from the USR site and remedied that problem. SysOpt.com
