Ok, so Wolf3D died a long time ago...I still like to play the dang thing from time to time...I still haven't beat every level.

Problem is, I swapped out the mainboard...same board, one version later.

FIC VA 503+, 256 mb Crucial PC 100 CAS2, Matrox G-200 w/16 mb sgram, Creative AWE64 16 bit audio (SB 16 compatable), Creative AWE 64 Wavetable MIDI (AWE 32 compatable).
Win98. (same setup as always)

The game used to run just fine from within Windows...executing the .EXE... Now, I get an error, (see JPG) The game will not run from DOS either...says not enough ram. I do not have any TSRs running from the Autoexec.bat or Config.Sys...everything has been rem'd out.

I think the problem is still ram, because when Wolf3D is executed, the first screen should indicate how much ram is available for use. It does not show anything in the 3 vertical places for this display. (Main, EMS & XMS) This could be because of something else going haywire I guess.

I have tried to reset the bios to the defaults...then I have tried to tweak the bios some about the caching of this and that..

I have tried all I can think of, with no positive results.

I have tried the Win help advice, but nothing happens.

I have executed (installed) a new application of Wolf3D from my archives..no go, same ole..same ole

Anything anybody else can suggest...I'll give it a shot...Thanks

Take a look at the JPG of the error

I think maybe 256MB RAM is too much for WOLF3d to recognise. I can run that old game with 128MB RAM. How about trying to remove half of your RAM? That might help...

Another thing could be a corrupt executable... Although I doubt that's unlikely...

RAM is not a problem in DOS

DOS maxes out at 64 Meg

regardless of 128 meg or 2 gig

i can play my DOS games fine in my XP 2000+ and 2 gig

you just need to set it up right

Bovon, try to run the game in Plain DOS, without going into Windoze, from what you have said so far, it seems like a problem with the Windoze's DOS that's causing the problem

Only use HIMEM.SYS on your Config.sys
and if that works, you can try adding
EMM386.EXE RAM to your config.sys

run the game SETUP program again, only to Test the sound and memory

and see if everything is AOK

Thanks for the interest. I have tried to run it from DOS, and it said 'not enough memory'...then gave me a few things to try...one being to rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys. I said "hmmmmmmm" and used a boot disk with no autoexec.bat or config.sys on it, and wahlah..the dang game came up (in DOS). It will not execute under Winderz...and I think it is a ram related deal. Remember...absolutely nothing changed from when it used to work to now, except a swap out of the mainboard. The mainboard is identical to the old one except it is one version newer. (old board ver 1.1B this one 1.2A). As I said before, the system Autoexec.bat and Config.sys have everything rem'd out, so I don't know whats up with booting off a disk with no Autoexec.bat or Config.sys on it.

Its nothing I can't live without, but its bugging me. I am pretty sure its a configuration problem somewhere...but where?...I have changed just about every setting in Windows and BIOS I can find that could have a bearing on this.

Before this, I had never tried to run it from DOS...I don't have the mouse or sound configured for DOS, so I donno if it would have ever run from DOS correctly.

hmm... as far as i now

DOS games never ran properly inside Windoze.

so if you were able to get it working it was quite a miracle ;)

i've always ran DOS games in real DOS, just exactely to prevent the kind of trouble you are describing :t

Thanks AG, I have put Wolf3D on several computers for family, always used Win98..Wolf always ran under Windows. I just don't have a clue!...but, I'm open to suggestions.

I'm getting ready to setup a new hard drive for this machine, and I will load Win98SE and after that, I will install Wolf just for the heck of it, and see if it will run first. I still think its a configuration problem. I have installed several apps recently, but most of these same apps were put on my grand neices machine I just built and took to her...it also has Wolf on it, and it runs fine there too.

(One difference between this board and the old one is, a newer bios...I had to flash the bios to recognize a K6-2+ processor. So far, I have seen no configuration difference in this bios as opposed to the old one. I have the manual which has the original settings for the original bios settings.)

Baffling!

The Only thing that can Affect a DOS game/program inside Windoze, is the .pif files that gets created

so you can do a right click properties on the .exe of the game ane verify the .pif to see what has changed on them

same deal with the .bat for those even older games :t

Well, I had a he**ova time getting this new hard drive setup..but it finally went my way. But, Wolf3D still will not run. The problem just has to be either a bios setting, or the bios version itself. Thanks for the input...I'll fiddled with the bios settings and see where that gets me..

Okedoke...I got it. I donno what I changed, but I loaded the bios setup defaults...and only changed my PCI to AGP setting for the video, and Wolf runs just fine under Winderz 98SE.

When I have time, I am gonna change one thing at a time in the bios until Wolf fails...that way, I can begin to understand the bios a little better..

Thanks for the input.
