I came up with an idea, for those of you that might remember my problem. Before implementing it, I wonder if some of you might proffer your opinions.

I was thinking of choosing a standard PC HAL in my next install, to see if that allows me to escape the dreaded monitor power-save problem I've been having.

Think that will work? It's not the drivers, it's not the video card, it's not the SiS AGP 1.11 patch, and it's not DirectX.

Everything runs flawlessly in Windows ME, but I need the higher RAM capabilities in Win2K.

Ideas?

Oh yeah, a recap of the specs:

ECS K7S5A motherboard with SiS 735 chipset, ATA-100 support
AMD XP 1800+ processor
300 watt power supply
256MB DDR-2100 RAM
Pine GeForce 2 Ti 64MB vid card
on-board AC-97 sound
SiS 900-based integrated Ethernet adapter
20 GB Western Digital ATA-100 5400 RPM drive
generic 44X CD-ROM
20x10x40 CD-RW drive

Successful Windows ME configuration of Direct X 8.1, Detonators version 30.82 for video, every game imagineable runs perfectly.

In Windows 2000/XP, after selecting any game via the shortcut, it starts to load, monitor cycles once to a blank black screen, then power-saves, and the system is deadlocked. A hardboot is the ony way out.

When I saw the suggestion for a standard PC HAL in another thread, I was practically kicking myself for not choosing that!

I await your replies :)

[EDIT] - I was able to run Quake 3 for some reason, as it runs in OpenGL. This prompted a flood of replies telling me to reinstall Direct X 8.1. I did this, and did so repeatedly on fresh installs of the OS. This did not solve my problem in either Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional. I'm at a loss as to why I can reach the menu in Quake 3, let alone play it, when I can't reach the game menus for CS, Unreal Tournament (the original), Serious Sam, Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge, or even Command and Conquer - Renegade. Bear this in mind when replying, please :)
