Just bought a top of the range IIyama 19" VM454 and yes the picture is quite good but am having the following problems and was admittedly expecting a bit better. Have experienced the IIyama customer service which was excellent and had the first monitor swapped out fairly quickly but now the second one has exactly the same problems, what to do?

The Problems:

I find the OSD controls take a bit of getting used to but no amount of messing around was able to solve the problems with the monitor which i had not experienced before with any other monitor. One thing I am finding is that it is proving impossibe trying to square up the image and getting it spot on.

Looking closely I can see a very slight shimmering similar to what you might get if you placed a mobile phone above or near a monitor but alot less discernable, this seems to disappear when the refresh rate is reduced from 85 to 75hz. I use 85hz as find the picture is alot more solid than 75 which for me produces discernable flicker. I have removed every possible cause of interference such as phones, speakers, cordless devices. I should say the resolution I use is 1280x1024 and sometimes a little higher.

Characters on the peripherary or corners appear slightly fuzzy when compared with text in the middle of the window which appears fairly sharp.

Very slight vertical distortion which I am noticing at the bottom right of the screen. This is apparent as window borders seem to bend ever so slightly and no amount of twiddling with the pin-cushion, pin balance or trapezoid settings can get rid of this.

I have to admit that I am pretty fussy and demanding when it comes to monitors and have a pretty sharp eye which is why i am went for what I thought was the best money could buy. I am beginning to think that finding a perfect 19" monitor could be alot more difficult than a 17" which is what I had before. I remember once reading that manufacturers cannot produce perfect monitors which is why we have the OSD controls to do the best we can!

Is there any software out there where I can actually test whether my monitor is performing as it should or shouldn't as I believe is happening here. Or do I ask for my money back and go elsewhere.

Many Thanks
Rex

hmmmm I used to love Illyama monitors about 5 years ago. Our work bought nothing but them. As for now they seem to be pretty poor. As for test software then sorry at a loss as clarity etc is really a test to the discerning eye.

You have good reason to expect a new monitor to have pin sharp clarity though. Not sure wether the larger the monitor the more difficult it is to get a 'perfect' picture but I'd imagine it is harder to manufacture.

Mine is a 17" Samsung Syncmaster 753DFX which has a 0.20 dot pitch and is pefect corner to corner at any resolution so you might want to cosider having a look at the the 19" version. Also LG Flatrons seems to get good reviews. Reason I mention the Samsung is it was a real bargain (8 months old) at £119 + vat from www.ebuyer.com ........just checked for you..19" Samsung 19" SM957DF DFL 0.20 is £196.29 + vat..free deilvery...... hmm alot pricier than my 17" one but I suppose thats what you have to pay for an extra 2 inches..lmao

DF means DynaFlat...and this screen is perfectly flat.

The Mitsubushi Diamond pros are worth a look as I've heard they are pretty good but pricier. Word of warning CTX monitors in my opinion SUCK big time....Had one 15" and had to have 3 replacements within its warranty time with identical problems.

Personally I'd return the Illyama and get a different make....Bad monitors will give you eye strain/headaches etc even without you noticing because they might be flickering and you can't tell. Oh by the way the Samsung runs at 100MHz.

Thanks terminator have just phoned IIyama and spoke to one of the engineers who indicated there is an allowable tolerance to the amount of distortion they will accept before rejecting the unit after manufacture. He has selected a monitor which will be sent to me later on this week so will say no more till then but will keep you posted. IIyama always seemed to have a good name but i am getting a little suspicous now but we will see.
