I'm new at using Linux and am trying to find some good places to go find information on how to network these two OSes. So far all I've come across is a lot of Samba related info. I realize this may be the simplest or most popular way, but am interested in learning of any other methods. Please give me some pointers or sites of reference if you can. Thanks.

I'm working once a week at a place with Win98 on 5 workstations and a pentium file/print server running RdHt 7.1 and SAMBA. It takes time to learn it, and I have the help of a guy who is an instructor in a university level UNIX class. Even he has trials and errors. I haven't gotten my hands into the server that much - still struggling with the Win desktop and the various users etc. etc. At the Linux World convention in S.F. in August, I met an author who has done a lot of SAMBA work and written a book. "Teach yourself SAMBA in 24 hours" a SAMS publctn. by Gerald Carter. Here's a pretty good bookstore -->www.halfpricecomputerbooks.com which sells it for a cheaper price.
Currently, the RedHat guy is puzzled about why the windows machines put print jobs into queue and when some other issue is troubleshot, it is not possible to open the queue and restart printing the file. So that's my question about Win98SE.I'm going to look a little further and get back to this thread later. a.

install Linxux (FREE), on any old 486/386 and play around with it
then you'll learn more :t

He already has it installed and is playing with it. I imagine that is the reason for the question.

thanks for the info. I'm getting things figured out slowly. I've also tried setting up ftp servers, webserver, and more so far. Actually seems to be working although I've likely left gaping holes in the security! Tried a few different versions of Redhat 7+ and I seem to like 7.2 better than 7.3. Next step is to try things out on Mandrake.

What you need to do is Configure Samba in Liinux with the IP addresses and then the Privelesges
For Windows 2000 what I did is Force the Mapped Connection in Explorer and typed in
\\ip.ip.ip.ip\home\
then mapped the Drive Home to (H) Drive
then
\\ip.ip.ip.ip\\Public\
then Mapped that to (P) Drive
Only have to ask for the password once and yer set
linux is yer Windows File Server
Just make Sure your Permissions are correct in Samba.conf and Stopp and Restart the Service to get it going
