Variable 03-06-2001, 04:57 AM I would suggest checking out gamecopyworld.com ! They have a section where they recommend CD-Writers.... Otherwise: Faster is not always better. I would look for things like RAW-Reading capabilities, support of 80 Min. or even 99 Min. CD-R's etc. RayH 03-06-2001, 05:10 AM Now, I wouldn't pay more than $75 for either unit. But if you're on a budget, they can be a good value. Unless you're into making multiple copies, the time difference in cutting a CD shouldn't make that much difference. Make a sandwich and come back! I have a 4x Mitsumi and I'm happy with it! Fingers 03-06-2001, 05:34 AM 4 - maximum write speed for CD-R's x 4 - maximum re-write speed for CD-RW's x 32 - maximum read speed Higher write speed will actually cause you more problems if your source drive can't keep a steady flow of data to the CD writer during the "burn". However, if that's a problem, you can just select a slower "write speed" before you begin. There is new technology available in CD writers called BURN-Proof. Drives that have BURN-Proof can turn of the laser and stop writing if the flow of data is interupted; they simply stop until the data is flowing again, then they resume. If the flow of data is interupted for even a split second on non burn-proof drives, the CD is ruined. Plextor probably make the best CD writer. The 12/10/32 and 16/10/40 both have BURN-Proof. If you're not on a budget and want a drive that is fast and never creates a coaster, spend $200 and get a good quality burner. It use to take me over half an hour to burn a full CD, and I didn't use my PC very much during that time for fear I'd end up with a coaster and have to start again. With my new PlexWriter, I can rip out a full CD in about 6 minutes, and use my PC normally while it's happening. I've even used a scanner while burning. jak 03-06-2001, 04:33 PM i just bought the tdk velo cdrw and it to has the burn proof technology. mine can brn a cdr at 12x and i can still surf the web and put demands on my comp and its still garenteed to be error free. it cost me though a whopping 250 w/out the 50 dollar rebate. jak Variable 03-07-2001, 06:38 AM does anyone by chance know if there are any cd-rw drives out there that turn of the laser when not used? (There was once a big discussion here about it) SysOpt.com
