Bought a new Toshiba laptop and it does not have a serial port. Can anybody recommend an adaptor that would convert the usb to a serial port. Thanks.

You can probably buy a port replicator from Toshiba....if not check out Belkin Products they do a very good USB hub which also has Serial Ports! www.belkin.com (http://www.belkin.com)

A port replicator won't add hardware. If there's no serial port on the box, there isn't one to replicate. A docking station could add the port but that's a bit extreme.

USB to Serial sounds like the fix.

what do you need a serial for?
i have them both on my laptop and my pc and I've even disabled them in the bios to free up the irq's!
Almost all serial port stuff (mouse, direct connection cable, etc) is available as USB stuff too! (and much better).

My company bought a few USB to serial adapters and we were having compatibility problems with them. But the old PCMCIA serial adapters were fine. The PCMCIA cards were made by Socket Communications http://www.socketcom.com .

You could post what laptop it is that you purchased so we can look up some specs. And if it turns out that you dont have a serial port then return it. And next time do your homework before you buy. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
