Ran into this article from a well known source, I don't have a cable modem but thought you guys might be interested in getting more speed out of your connection with this reg hack HERE (http://www.askmarvin.ca/CableModems/tcpset.htm) obviously I can't try it but you guys can, have fun.

If you do let us know how it goes.

i use the tweaks from www.speedguide.net too.
i'm limited to 180 kbps downstream, so they only help so much. :(

You know dslreports.com has a tool that checks things like your RWIN and MTU settings and lets you know if they are optimal. You then can download their DR. TCP software to configure the settings for your individual computer, unlike the tweaks that speedguide.net give which are only general tweaks.

I use the ones at Speedguide (http://www.speedguide.net) as well. I've had AT&T BI for a year and a half and used those tweaks back then, and they worked fine. I'm in a pretty good area, my speeds are pretty constant at 1450/240. No complaints. :t

Oh yeah, before you had to reinstall Office, I hope you ran the registry download that puts your registry back to it's original state? It's there just in case you have problems like you had.

The success rate for this tweak is quite good which is why I recommended it, if your speed is 650 you should be able to double it with this tweak and there is an undo plus if you know how to export your registry someplace nearby it would get you back to where you left off in any event.

Rich Pirillo from techtv fame recommended it and to my knowledge hasn't steered anybody wrong, of course this is a reg tweak so the typical care of working with the reg should be taken.

I'm quite aware of speedguide and the rest and probably everybody else is, I've applied tweaks that were out and out useless and some that were great, nothing an undo can't correct.

Very nice , rangeral. I've always just used the RWIN tweak only. Never did find the other tweaks 'speedguide' adheres to, to work for me. The chart is great . Never could convert binary well. Now I'll have alot values to try out for better performance. Thanks for the link.

if your speed is 650 you should be able to double it with this tweak
Keep in mind to anyone who uses this tweak, if your ISP has you capped, don't expect to get ANY higher than your capped limit. With my ISP, ATTBI, I'm capped at 1500/256.

rangeral
09-20-2002, 07:14 PM
Yes I was worried about breaking the cap which is illegal but considering the source they wouldn't have you breaking the law.

So it had to be within guidelines considering the success with the tweak which brings to mind one story in another forum years back about some user posting from turkey or some place like that saying he broke the cap and got phenomal speeds but was nervous about breaking the law and wanted to reverse what he did probably cause they might cut your hands off if they catch you there as a joke. :D We had him going.

Bigjakkstaffa

I thought the only possible way to break the cap was to hack the telecom company's docsis or whatever it is... and if they find out you land in the slammer...

...if your gettign faster than your cap though (ie me getting 300Kbps on my 128kbps line as happened tyhe other day ) dont worry - apparently windows can report them numbers back incorrectly :)

Well, Al, used the tweak and I'm now getting 519kbs where it was around 400 previously.

Things feel a lot faster too, although that is hardly scientific, but download speeds of 71kBs sustained are way better than 60kB previously.

Please, thank you.:D

rangeral

Glad it worked out! "Feeling is believing" can be credible.

Yeah but ammok, all the 512kbps ntl users like yourself have just been upgraded to 600kbps free of charge... that might also be a factor in your speed gains...

--Jakk:t

rangeral
09-21-2002, 03:37 PM
That would be good except I doubt it would have gone up at precisely the time that he tried the tweak, maybe a little too coincidental for just that moment if he tested or used it just prior to the tweak or maybe he uncapped himself just a tad bit so to speak to accept the new speed.

Since when have I been upgraded? I feel cheated in reverse, b*ggers give u something extra and then don't tell me about it! Blaggards.

Honestly, I am sure I could "feel" the difference right after the req tweak, does seem to work. Web pages loading instantanaeously now, before, slight delay accessing.

I'm off to nthell world to complain.:D

Hehe, I get as much downstream as the system can spare (between 2.2 and 3.0) and am capped at 32kilobytes a second up. Hehe I love Cox.

Right chaps, just finished backing up my system and re-installing XP,(never had this much trouble with 2K, moan moan), and with no cr*ap running whatsoever, firewalls, av etc, I managed a superb 571 kbs download on the extreme test at www.pcpitstop.com

I have now just triggered the reg tweak and will now reboot. Back in a mo to let yuo all know if there is a difference. I am shocked at the size of jump just by reinstalling XP, however, and would not now expect a great difference as I'm only supposed to be getting 600k anyway(thx Jakk).

Back in a bit.:D

Their just teasing. Waiting for you get absolutely desperate before a nice young lady says, oh that was all a mistake, I'll just push this button and voila!!!

In your dreams Jakk, this is the uk. I got a mate who has a very large NYNEX box(thats ntl to you) right out side his house, and ntl keep telling him he is not in an area that has it. I beleive the box suffered some damage recently.....
