thanks for your welcome

no overclocking !
I'm still trying to get the basics right !

I've checked my DirectX files are intact ...
I've checked my BIOS settings ...

and when I update the nVidia drivers the system crashes

Is it a blue screen of death crash??

If so the error name and what not might be helpful :)

Go to Device Manager
click on View
Enable Show Hidden Devices
then select your Video Adapters
and UNINSTALL THEM ALL
then reboot
then re-install the drivers

Hey it's great that you guys give time to help.
Thanks for the suggestions …
Yep I did that
uninstalled the old drivers and reinstalled the latest 3082 driver on the clean system …
again it failed to reboot and I had to use ‘Last known good configuration’ to boot back to the old useless drivers …

the WindowsXP error message is not the dreaded blue screen but an error report quoting –
a memory dump = 091902.dmp
and a settings file = systemsdata.xml

plus a request to report the error to MicroSoft … !!

Have you tried any other drivers? You could go to guru3d.com and have your choice of a bunch of drivers for Nvidia. I am running the Detonator 29.42 version and am pretty happy with them. It is also possible that your downloaded file got corrupted and you may need to redownload the 30.82's and reinstall them. Your old drivers are the 21.83 version and while they are supposed to be very stable, there are certainly faster versions available in the newer releases. Unfortunately, no drivers are going to make your Geforce 2 MX 200 into anything more than what it is, which is a pretty slow card. For $40 or so you could pick up a Geforce 2 Pro card that would show significant improvement in all 3D applications. E-Mail me if interested. :t

hmmmm ....
thanks and yes I've already tried the 29.42 driver with the same result !!
it seem I have to go back to 21.83 to get any video at all.

and yes in the end I may have to try another card but it would be nice to be able to evaluate the Geforce2 MX first !!
I can't even get it operating slowly with DirectX ...

Have you tried another card? Maybe you just got a bad one. The only other two things I can think to try would be to remove and reseat your ram (not quite installed ram can do lots of weird stuff) and the last resort to try before returning the video card would be a complete reformat and reinstall of everything. Many times people have had similar problems and the reformat is able to get rid of whatever windows issues are preventing the card from working properly. Others may have other options to the rather extreme step of reformatting, but it remains something else to try. Was the video card the original card in your system, or did it replace a different card?

try these 40.x drivers
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_40.41

it might work, you'll never know unless you try :t

I have now progressed but not solved ...

the card has been tried on another Windows'98SE system and appears to work fine ... all DirectX Diagnostics OK with 2183 driver

I have updated my BIOS which corrected some other USB problems

... so I'm left with XP incompatibility or rather my settings with XP ...

should I reformat and reinstall XP?

will I have to reactivate again?

I really like XP apart from this Geforce2 MX200 driver problem

I hope you have solved your problem by now, but I had a thought. I ran into a similar problem with my GF2mx400, but it was while installing winxp. I had to use my old Voodoo3 to install windows, then change the card to my GF2 after it was up and running. Never figured out why. Good luck.

:)

have you tried the 40.72 !???

When I used to run a MX400 I found that the best driver's were the 22.50's, the later drivers used to cause me all sorts of problems.

I have now done a clean reinstalled of XP … and SP1

Exactly the same problems emerge …
DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag.exe) crashes.
MS crash analysis identifies the cause as the Nvidia Driver and recommends Driver 30.82.

30.82 seems to install OK but the system crashes on reboot as before
recovery is from ‘last known good settings that worked’
and I’m back to the 2183 driver …

and yes I’ve tried 40.72
same result I’m back to 2183 …

woe ...:(

Do you reinstall with a different Video card. I could never get mine to install with the GF2, I had to swap it with another, then intall the GF2 again when xp was finished.

is time to look at your IRQ table and see what else is casing the problem

...oh lord here we go again

-To get the irq list:

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Information

Then select Hardware resurces>Irq's and post a pic in here... personally i doubt the problem lies there though...

same here...

it doesnt seem like an IRQ problem!

AllGamer

This method might be easier :t

to pring out an IRQ table do the following

run msinfo32.exe

go to HARDWARE RESOURCES

select IRQs

right click, Save As Text File

I think AG has a bit of a thing with IRQ's ;)

I remember when installing the 30.82 drivers for 98 on a windows 98 system, a game would run for about 20 seconds and then hang. Reverting to the older drivers alleviated the problem, and the brand-new 40.72 drivers for '98 worked flawlessly.

hmmmm ....

I see DFI launched the NB73-ES motherboard in a blaze of publicity on May 21st 2002

I now see, October 2002, it is 'an achived product' !!
Do they know something I don't?

Is this speed of obsolecence usual?

If you wanna be cutting edge nowadays a new rig will last a year maybe a bit more, before you have to look at upgrades or even a full replacment system, such is the world of computers :(
