I am trying to install a new graphics card (geforce4) onto my MB (ASUS cusl2) which has an on board graphics card. How do I go about this? I have put the new card into the AGP slot and re-booted, but win98se doesn't detect it. Is this because it already has one in use, the onboard one? Do I have to diable it, if so what is the sequence? Please help

that's correct
you must first go into the BIOS
then Dissable the On Board Video
then plug your monitor cable to the already installed AGP GeForce 4
and reboot, and Win98 should detect it
if it does not
boot again to SafeMode
remove all the Old video cards you see listed
then reboot again to Normal mode
now Plug And Play should do its job
get the latest drivers 30.x :t

Thanks Jakk and AllG. Ok, I've found the dissable onboard VGA in the bios. I'll click dissable, but then what? Do I plug the monitor into the new card now, or exit bios, continue boot up, restart then do it? I scared of updating the bios...it sounds tricky.

Save the changes to the BIOS and exit.. then hit the power - i know your not supposed to -- but whadda they knw :p - then plug into the new card and give it a go... if no luck its BIOS upgrade time for the mobo :x

A lot has happened since my last post. I dissabled the onboard card in bios, powered off, restarted.Win98se detected the new card, but now it can't read from the cdrom drive. It says it is not ready, therefore I couldn't install the driver for the new card. Windows chose one itself, but now I can only view my screen in 16 colors at 640x480 pixels. The driver it chose is PCI, but the card is AGP. Can you help....this screen is doing my eyes in.

Sounds like in the absence of proper drivers windoze has just classed it as standard VGA (PCI) Device... which is fine... next step is to get the proper drivers installed and all will be cured... dont worry bout it :)

just run that file you got and it's done
it's 100% automatic
the only thing you need to do after that is say
OK to reboot
:D :t
i hope that's not too hard :p

Just make sure you have no anitvirus software running when you install em as they are known to play up in some cases :x

main one would be check the power cables... :)
Also are they on seperate IDE channels or individual.. might be worth seperating em'... then check the jumpers.. thwen try another IDE cable... hopefully it wont go that far though :)

All wires are ok. The drives don't show up in device manager, so could it be something to do with the bios? It started when I dissabled the old onboard graphic card.

Hmmm.... When you are booting up
Does your POST screen shows your CD ROM as detected?
jimijames

Yep, they show up during POST. And by the way, I now have two monitors listed in device manager,Syncmaster, which is what I have, and is what was there before all this began, and default monitor.

you have to go to Safe Mode first
and you must enable SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES

Did what you said...right clicked and removed from device man...restarted. Now they are showing up in dev. man. but are still not accessible.

Well I may have another problem now! Since my last post, windows has stopped twice during boot up. When I warm boot(?) it tells me to restart in safemode. Then when I restart from safe mode it's ok. I also have two monitors listed in device man., syncmaster, which it is, and default monitor. When I view them in safe mode, I have two of each.
