I have an 200mmx overclocked to 225(3x75) on a tx chipset MB and an maxtor 8.4 GB. Both support UDMA but when i enable the udma checkmark for the hard disk in device manager windows takes forever to start and applications also take much longer to start. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what can i do about it.

my guess is that you dont need to check the box for UDMA. I am running windows 98 with a Maxtor 10 gig UDMA and I dont even have a box to check for UDMA. I have a Super7 motherboard and I am supposed to install the drivers to enable UDMA support but they screw everthing up and if I dont use them, my drive runs UDMA anyways. Maybe just leaving it off youll get the UDMA that you want.

Ive been goin nuts tring to find the difference between the BIOS's UDMA and the device manager's DMA settings. The strange part is i can have either on but if i have both on my system will freeze over. Wonder if someone else can shed some light on this subject

I had trouble with the TX chipsets and a couple maxtor drives on an abit PX5 and AOpen AP5T-3 Mobo's. Never could get UDMA to work on them. When using a WD caviar AC313000RTL and a FIC 503+ or Epox MVP3G-M with a VIA chipset I get an increase from 5.5MB/sec to 8MB/sec either by using plain win98 Busmaster drivers and checking DMA in device manager or installing VIA's latest busmaster drivers and using the VIADMATOOL to set it up.

I've been having some problems with my new Maxtor 10G drive and my Soyo 5EMA with Etec (VIA) chipset MB.
I was previously using a Samsung 3.2G drive along with a Quantum Fireball without any problems. Since installing the Maxtor without installing the UDMA drivers, I have constant lags and error messages.
There's also a long pause at 'verifying DMI', which shouldn't be happening. To this date, I've tried changing jumpers, BIOS settings, but nothing helps.

I just installed a Maxtor 83840A6 and it works fine in DMA mode on my epox mobo. 3.04 MB/sec PIO 4 3.27 MB/sec DMA.
Make sure that in 'Device Manager' under hard drive controllers the parent device is (UDMA) and primary and secondary controllers are (dual fifo)
Good Luck

Thanks for all the tips. The things is with the udma checkmark enabled i get a 3 mb/s increase in my average read speed and cpu utilization drops from 84 to 7 % (according to HD tach)so it would be great if could use udma. I also tried the xstore pro udma drivers for my MB but no difference. Also my previous HD a Western Digital didn't have any problems with udma checked.
