I don't want to spend too much, since this is our spare one for the kids to use. So how about around $200.00. Can I do anything with that?

Thanks!:t

I realize it may be tight but I need it for play only for the kids, I have a brand new dell computer for the adults that has a pentium 4. I just want to upgrade for them to play games that require a higher processor instead of them having it on the new computer. Any recommendations and where would be the best price?:)

Given your budget and stated purpose, I would suggest that you check out a system based on the Via processor. Someone posted a link to some really cheap Walmart systems. They had "Lindows" as the O/S, but I don't suppose there's anything stopping you from formatting the hard drive and installing a 'real' O/S.

What do you mean a real operating system?

Try going over to pricewatch to look for the seperate components you need. Lowest price isn't always the best deal, though, as the folks at resellerratings will tell you. Check out the vendor and customer feedback over there to avoid any e-vendor nightmares.

If that doesn't do it, perhaps a used/refurbished P3 system, sans monitor, would to the trick? If you're buying the system for gaming, pay close attention to the graphics adapter and avoid any mainboard with onboard graphics in case you want to upgrade GPU in future.

I guess I mean some flavour of Windows. The O/S on the Walmart systems is 'Lindows', not Windows. Although there is some merit in trying to break M$'s monopoly, the fact is that it probably makes more sense for 'the kids' to start off learning Windows.

By the way did you read my other message to you?

If you are planning to keep the Same Dell Case for the new Mobo+CPU+RAM

it'll not work

the Dell format is different :(
