Is it just me or does anyone else experience very slow sysopt page loading at times due to ads4.earthweb.com?
I have DSL and good connections but sometimes sysopt drags like a 14.4 modem while loading ads4.earthweb.com - is there any way to overclock that server or should I just turn off images?
I notice this more at some times than others.
In my case, the page loads slowly from time to time, but when I press the reply or edit button, it takes forever sometimes for the page to load. This is happening more frequenlty these days...

Been having the same problem, thanks to your posts I know it's not just me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Sometimes were the top banner goes I get a "page cannot be displayed" message. Also, the pages seem to be "hanging" while loading or changing pages.
Dave
Edit- BTW, there is something else that I havent been able to figure out recently, maybe it's related.
Sometimes a page here will reload real quickly and I can see a "phantom" box quickly appear and dissapear at the top of the screen. It appears just to the left of the "ads for earthweb" banner and lasts less than a second. I have cleaned my TIF's, cookies, and history compleatly and I'm postive everything is running well on this system. I'm not positive, but I think it has only happened on this site. -edit

It's been posted before on how to prevent this.......
Hint -- it depends on how good a Hosts you are.

Heck I've only posted about this like 2 or 3 times now I think it's kinda funny that this is a professional IT Site and a lot of the time it loads like your connecting on a 33.6 modem when your running DSL http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
I know it's just this site couse I can jump to any othere and they all load fine

I read the messages here at SysOpt pretty much every day, but I don't remember reading anything about this particular problem. Maybe that's just because it's never been a problem for me before.
I don't know what's causing the pages to loads so slowly, but quite frankly, it's really starting to affect my desire to even spend time at SysOpt. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
ps. I don't mind waiting a few seconds for the server to serve up the page, but if this is a "banner ad" that's dragging down the entire site so badly, then I'm gonna change my position on banners. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

CMonster, follow BFlurie's lead. Your hosts file is the key. I too just tonight got fed up with ads4.earthweb.com and gave them the kiss of death.

Do you have the thread that refers to this "Host Key" thingy? Is this a setting that needs to be done or something? Pages are taking about 20 seconds to load right now at this time. This is very annoying!

A word of warning: I had problems with the 'new' Hosts file. Make sure you make a backup of the current Hosts before you try this.
I'm on W2K, LAN, WinPoET DSL connection. After backing up the original and placing the new Hosts file from Here (http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html) and rebooting, bootup time was considerably slower, loading time was slower, my DSL connection would not connect, system would not respond, Explorer not accessible, not able to 'shut-down' - had to force a reboot, chkdsk reported a ShellIconCache trunc and made other unspecified corrections to the file syste,.
Not sure what happened, but after replacing my original, backed-up Hosts file, everything was okay again.

There's no need to block everything, just add one simple line to the "hosts" file. This is the only one that seems to have trouble loading in a timely manner.
127.0.0.1 ads4.earthweb.com
I'll remove the line whenever I become aware that ad4.earthweb.com is working again.

Edit to above: Ok, this time I manually edited the Hosts file thru Notepad and added the entries posted in Jad's link. Everything works like it should.
The ads4.earthweb ads at SysOpt helps to generate revenue for this site, so I will not recommend adding it to the Hosts file.
Hopefully the new owners/managers of this site will consider the slowdown of those visiting these pages and weighing the potential lost readership generating those revenues and find a more user-friendly ad service, or make changes to this one so pages will load without delay.
Dave: Are you referring to those tiny boxes? I've noticed those as well, on occasion. Perhaps it has something to do with security settings for your browser? I keep my IE5 browser settings pretty secure, but haven't played with various options to check it out.

The box I see sometimes come up is about the same hight as the banner add and maybe half as wide. All I see is a real quick outline then it's gone. I'll try playing around with my security settings but It dosn't happen too often.
Not too big of a deal, just something I never seen happen here before. At least it ain't no web buggs, haven't seen any around here yet http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I recently re-formated my HD and havent got around to DLing any browser updates so I'm using IE4 that comes standard on the OEM version of WIN98 (not SE) and it pops up a box that says it cannot connect to the server ads4.earthweb.sysopt.com then I click ok and were tha baner should be there is a navigation canceled page. thats what people get for using a java based banner rotation system. (ezboard has used these javabanners before and they did the same thing, considerable slow downs which I was noticing on IE5, but they just switched hosting services and are fast again)

Nice link -Linux friendly http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif thanks. I haven't killed the add server - I know that pays the bills for sysopt, but I was hoping to bring it to someone's attention.
