I am using Excel 97 for work and I have prepared a spreadsheet that contains multiple tabs. The size of the spreadsheet is now over 1mb.
How can I reduce the size of the file?
These are some of the format characteristics of the file:
- multiple tabs (>30)
- grid lines show
- some grey coloring but not much
- font size 9
- some bolding
- formulas
- links to other tabs
Thank you!

- use only the tab(s) that you need
- do not use too many fonts
- do not use Page border formating
- do not use water marks
- try to use as little bold, italic, highlight, etc as you can
- try avoiding to use too many colors
- etc
- every little bit adds up to the end results of the page
- and even if you deleted it stupid MS office keeps those codes there
- but simply the best way is to ZIP the file after you have finished it :D

Hit the End and then the Home keys.
That takes you to the lower right corner of the spreadsheet. I've occasionally accidentally typed something into line 65536 which makes the sheet huge. I then delete the entire extra rows and resave.

That just brings up another point
Why does Excel do such a stupid thing?
instead of adding the lines and colums that you need as you go along
it automatically starts you off with a huge sheet
very badly programmed / designed IMHO )-|

I've read somewhere today, that you should only use 1 spreadsheet. It's good practise and it easier to read and understand. Delete every other empty spreadsheet. It's just confusing, because others check these empty sheets to see if there are any information there.
I shall see tomorrow if I can find the site (at work) and post the link to it here. It was 10 good tips for Excel I believe.

YES - blank sheets should be deleted, its often very handy to use multiple sheets and 3d cell references, especially where school or college work is regarded as examiners look for it... i quite like 3d referencing also as it enables one to quickly add formulas to other areas of the spreadie without having to copy the formulas across one at a time... simply write down the formula cell loacations and then put a reference to em :D, however theres no point having em there if they aint doin nottin' :)

Fancy stuff are good as long as they remain in Excel
but as soon as you try to export to a html or txt
it becomes a nitemare
learned this the hard way
and now trying to keep everything as simple as possible so
convertions are less headachey :D

I got rid of the bold, italics and underlines
I deleted everything around the information on ALL tabs (40)
I then copied all the tabs onto a new book and then saved it. Guess what...it stayed the same!!
How can that be? How can such changes not affect the size by at least a couple of KB's?

what is the current size?

The current size is 1,200,000kb
Perhaps that is the correct size for a 40 tabs spreadsheet and I am asking for too much?

1 meg is about fine
if you have a lot of stuff that is
here's a sample of a blank excel document and it's only 13 kb
it's renamed to .txt
when you get it rename it back and open it then check the size
that way we can see maybe if it's a virus or not :t

Thank you for your help.
Now that you showed that one empty tab has the size of 13kb, I am confident that 1MB for a 40 tab spreadsheet is accurate:
13kb x 40 = 520kb + information = 1.14MB That is OK
Thank you!
