I have just built a computer with this board and have various general protection faults and lock ups. Has anyone had this problem come up. I have updated all drivers for the board. This is a budget computer. Components are as follows:

Win98SE
Celeron 1.8G
Integrated audio and video.
Kingston 2100 DDR 256

The problem mainly arises when I am using the CD-ROM and playing games. It runs fine when I run Word and other non-CD-ROM programs.

Thanks in advance.

Did you just switch boards and not reinstall Windows? That's a no-no. There's too much crapola left from the other chipset.

You can try repairing Windows by booting from the CD and selecting Repair > Fast Repair. You'll have to re-apply the Service Pack and update IE again though.

Otherwise, it's reinstall time. :(

Thanks BipolarBill

The hard dive is new. There is no swapping of motherboards. All the harware is new. The hard drive is a bare WD and did not come with the setup disk. I did the OS install using DOS format. I did some researce on Western Digitals site and they have all the utilities for the drive there. If I scrap the install and start over with the WD utilities, would have a sigificant difference. I have never done an install with out a hard drive disk..

This is my fourth computer build and the only one having these problems. I thought I knew what I was doing till now.

Your thoughts please.

Ok then - I would suspect questionable memory quality as the source of the problem. If you have two sticks, remove one and reinstall. At the first sign of trouble, swap sticks and see if the problems continue.
